Hi all, I have just started on IM and want to embark on SEO. Glad to have found this forum.

I have a slightly noobish question though, are sites like webmd, mayoclinic, medicine health easy to outrank if they are not specifically targetting the keywords in their titles?

That doesnt help one bit, the way traffic travis's ranks easiness is complete bullshit but I think it is still a good tool to check your competitors backlinks, age domain etc at a glance..

without even using it i am pretty sure it will say it is extremely difficult ( 1 star) due to the page rank of sites like mayoclinic and webmd..

but I have heard from others that these sites are actually easy to outrank because they are ranking based on the domain authority only.. so i am asking for people whom have experience outranking these type of sites

Traffic Travis give you lots of useful data, but the "easiness" ranking is not to be relied on..

Enter your keyword in their SEO too, look at the competition for those keywords, the decide for yourself if you can compete. If you want to beat a high-PR 15 year old site with tons of natural back-links, you're going to have to work very hard at it..

These websites are considered as authority websites of their niche... First thing, this niche itself is very competitive
Second, outranking such websites is bit difficult... These websites are even outranking sites like wikipedia.

Easy?

What's easy to one, may be difficult for another.

Keyword in Title is a big ranking factor. If the competitor does not have it,
they will be easier to beat than if they do have it. The same is
true for keyword in URL and keyword anchored somewhere on page.

Depends on the actual URL and if the page is optimized and has backlinks to it.

For example webmd.com/some-long-tail-keyword-0-backlinks/ can be easier to outrank than say webmd.com/cancer/

Well it depends on these factors:

1. Is the keyword long tail or short tail? Of the keywords that the user types in, how many is present for the authority site? If the keyword is long tail and the authority site doesn't have many of the keywords listed in the title, it would be relatively easy to outrank.

2. Authority sites usually have more command in the serps, usually because their homepage has huge quantities of backlinks, and usually helps their subpages too. You must take into consideration the pages backlinks as well as the homepages backlnks too.

There are many other factors, but these are 2 of the main ones.
