Keenan Santos & Reuben Fernandez Murders Mumbai - Victims of the Bystander Syndrome

For those with our typical ADHD attention spans, here’s what happened. On 23rd October 2011, group of cricket fans came together to enjoy a match on a big screen, have dinner at Amboli Kitchen and Bar in Mumbai, eat pan and have fun. What followed didn’t quite work out that way.

Dinner done, as they were at the paan shop, a drunk man stumbled against one of the girls. Thinking that this is your average garden variety drunk, one of the men in the group, Avinash Solanki, slapped him. Got into a verbal spat, another friend, Reuben Fernandes, hit him too. However, this was no garden variety drunk lecher (which are kind of common on streets). This man had two murder cases pending against him, and he was a barber and roaming around scot free.

He was accompanied by a few other men. Angry and wanting revenge, he swore he’d be back, and the group dismissed him. Shaken over what happened, but not expecting trouble, they continued to stand there. Meanwhile, said man returned with a group of people in three rickshaws – thirteen, many said – and his original companions. They were armed with swords and knives. Keenan and Reuben tried to reason with them while the others got the girls out of the way to safety. Keenan Santos was stabbed viciously, and his intestines spilled out. As Bejnamin tried to get the girls into the restaurant, some of the thugs followed them.

Reuben Fernandes got in their way and was viciously stabbed too. As onlookers watched in shock, Avinash Solakni hurled a nearby ladder at them and pulled Keenan and Reuben into the restaurant. The thugs did not follow them into the restaurant, and left.

Still without assistance, Avinash and Benjamin struggled to get Keenan and Reuben to the hospital on time. Many excuses were heard in the media, but the bottom line is, onlookers DID NOT HELP. Keenan’s girlfriend informed his parents, who arrived just in time to watch him die 20 minutes after being admitted. A week later, Reuben is still fighting for life. One life lost, one life hanging on by a thread. Because a crazy drunk didn’t see anything wrong in molesting a woman or to attack her friends for defending her. The first thought that came to my mind was if I would ever want my friends to come to my rescue if it would mean them paying with their lives. Then I wondered, what kind of a world would it be, if we can’t count on each other to help.

Reuben passed away on the 31st October after battling for life for a week.

TL;DR Version

A few friends goto a restaurant to have some fun. After the food, they and the girls with them get out of the bar and stand near a Pan shop (Small shop selling Betel leaves, tobacco products, smokes etc.) when a drunk makes a wrong move towards one of the girls. They get into an altercation, the drunk flees but returns with a group. In the fight that followed, two of the guys are killed, while onlookers keep on looking.

They have an enormous Social media campaign going on in India at the moment.

My interpretation of the timeline:

1. Friends go to restaurant.
2. Drunk stumbles against one of the girls.
3. Avinash Solanki slaps the drunk.
4. Reuben Fernandes hits the drunk.
5. The drunk is like brb getting buddies, swords, and buddies with swords.
6. The group stays in the same place.
7. The drunk returns with buddies, swords, and buddies with swords.
8. Keenan Santos gets sliced open.
9. Reuben Fernandes gets stabbed a lot.
10. Drunk and his army leave.
11. Avinash Solanki and friends fail to get Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandes to the hospital in a timely fashion.*
12. Keenan Santos dies a little while later at the hospital.
13. Reuben Fernandes dies two weeks later at the hospital.

* This is where bystanders are said by the OP not to have helped.

Obviously what the drunk dude did wasn't acceptable, but I bet Avinash Solanki feels like shit knowing that him acting like a dick helped to lead to two of his friends getting killed. Keenan Santos and his parents are the people I really feel sorry for here.

If you're in a group with girls being a part of it and a drunk dude tries to get comfortable with one of the girls and/or makes sexual remarks, what would be your immediate reaction?

At the very least, you'd shove the fucker? Or slap him? Or if you're in one of your rage moods, you'd beat the hell out of the scumbag?

Also the bystanders didn't do anything when the fight was on, nor when they were being rushed to the hospital.

The Avinash dude did everything in his power to save the guys, so I don't really understand why he would feel sorry. In my opinion, the only remorse he'd have is the fact that he couldn't save his friends.

I wouldn't do anything for a girl that I wouldn't do for a guy. That's chauvinism.

These two white knights should have played it cool instead of jumping in and getting aggressive. Who were they trying to impress with all the macho slapping?

you cant behave like a online troll and just attack people, you have to be tactful.

You should have diffused the situation with the guy groping the girl in a more tactful manner, dont underestimate strangers they coud be anyone, in this case a gang member and a serial murderer.

These two guys failed when they slapped and punched the drunk guy, could have handled it better like.

like talking to the guy calmly and distratc him and take him away from the girl and talk some sense into him.

IT'S double stupid to be a hero in foreign country, you dont know what the fuck someone can do. At least in your neighbourhood or home twon you re familair with how things work, dont try to be a hero in a foreign country, if the locals dont want to step in, its a sigh that you shouldnt step in

Your mention of chauvinism is both vague and irrelevant in this context. Who knows the guys would've done the same had the drunk attacked a male friend.

No one was trying to impress anyone. You and me were not in the area and hence we cannot comment on the intensity of the situation wherein the youngsters were forced to shackle the drunkard.

Foreign National? Who said anything about a foreign national? All the people involved were Indian residents living in Mumbai and were on a Night out in their own city.

Forget talwars and kukris, what if it was a gun? In a crowded -ass place like Mumbai you could fire blindly and hit 10 people with 5 rounds.

Tact is the name of the game.

For two years I lived in a midwest state that had a lot of two things: bars and guns. I only saw once incident where a guy came back to the bar with a rifle. But it was handled well, and nobody got hurt.

Gotta use tact, bro. No need to resort to slaps.

Yes, that is your wisdom speaking mate. But what would you expect from a bunch of teenagers who (most likely) had no previous similar experience.

The noteworthy thing is not that they got into an altercation with a man who had priors. What's to be noted is that -

- The Police response time SUCKED! I stay in a suburb and the average police response time here is 3 to 5 minutes (24 hours). I know this because I have called the police or been with someone who called the police more than once.
Also, the police department accepted their "mistake".

- The Bystanders remained mute witnesses. During the fight and even after the goons had left. So yeh well, fuck them.

Why would you get involved in something when people have swords and knives? That seems like a really bad idea.

The person in concern was in a drunken stupor and unarmed when the altercation took place. He fled the scene initially and then returned with his friends who were then armed.

The assault was in retaliation to an altercation between Reuben & Keenan’s friends and a member of the mob, who was drunk and had fallen over one of the girls in the group.

Taken from the OP.

I might be missing something here. At what point did the drunk grope or fondle any of the girls?

Can you link to a credible article which mentions the crazy maafugga groped one of the girls? It's sad that they were killed, but if he accidentally stumbled into them and got slapped for it they're asking for trouble.

I agree with many of the posts above. If the drunk guy just stumbled against the girl and wasn't seriously molesting or attacking her then those guys should not have hit him. Yes, we weren't there, but either were you, so how do you know who properly instigated it?

Also why would any bystander get involved when swords are knives are involved? If you are saying that they should have got involved in the first place then that would be to restrain the guys who beat up a drunk. Maybe one of the bystanders should have knocked one of them out right?

The moral of this story is don't fuck with people unless they are seriously fucking with you or your loved ones/friends and you have no choice. If you do you should always expect consequences.

By the way I fully sympathize with the dead and injured guys families and do not think they got what they deserved, or proportional retribution. I believe that drunk asshole should be strung up together with the rest of his "gang".

You can never know someones priors. Heck, you can marry someone and only 20 years later find out the shit they were involved in by accident. This can happen to anyone.

I blame the white knight syndrome. These guys probably wanted to look like heroes, impress the girl, maybe end up getting to second base that night.

You think anyone here would get so macho with their own wives? Of course not.

All this shit is about impressing the girl.

Did the swords look like this?
BA004sm.jpg

If so then you want to maneuver yourself above the assailants. Slide across some laundry lines till you flank them. Then do a double bounce across some fruit stand canopies. Have your monkey pull their pants down and cover their eyes with their hats while you slide down a curtain and hide in a basket. If you are in a position to kick barrels at them do it.

It's important everyone knows how to defend themselves against gangs with swords.
