Got rid of the iPhone

On the firing line
I'm not an Apple fanboi, so while I used to love my iPhone, I was never "in love" with it.

Then... I got an Android tablet, and started to really see what I was missing.

Then... iOS 5 came out, and like a fool I updated my phone.

Fuck.

Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck.

What was a decent phone, and okay portable productivity device became a fucking annoying piece of shit. First: iOS took away the combined music / videos app (button? can't remember what it was called now) and split them into two buttons. Why? Then it added another button for Newstand and I can't get rid of it. AND a whole bunch of other little things that just annoyed the fuck out of me. Like random recordings when the phone is locked. How to turn that off? Why do I have 20 + recordings of me breathing, or eating, or talking, or smoking? What caused the phone to decide "Hey, it's time to record something!" ?

After a few weeks of iOS 5, I said "Fuck you iPhone" and got a Razr.

Happy Mike now.

I like Android a lot. No, it's not perfect, but it works in the way I expect it to, and the browser(s) are far superior to Apple's half assed piece of shit browser. I never liked the Apple browser, so iOS 5 didn't do anything to help my opinion of that.

For those of you wondering:

1. Isn't the Razr fucking huge? ie. TOO big?

No. At least not in my opinion. I actually like the larger size. Love the larger screen.

2. What about battery life?

Not really sure how to compare this. I didn't think the iPhone battery was worth a shit, and the Razr seems to be just as good (or bad) as the iPhone.

3. It doesn't have "Retina" graphics.
So? The screen resolution is still fantastic. I'm very happy with it. Can't see the pixels, it's crisp, it's bright, it supports HD. What more do you need really?

4. It's not shiny like the iPhone.
True. You got me there.

5. It doesn't have a billion games for $0.99 or free like Apple's appstore.

This is one point that I will concede to the iPhone. If you want the ultimate hand held gaming device, get an iPhone or iPod Touch.

6. Why do you need more than one browser?
I like to play. I like options. I like to be able to see my graphs, and not get a big block in the middle of the screen because flash isn't supported. Plus, Dolphin HD is really sweet! Much better than the stock broswer

7. Widgets?
Yes, Android has widgets. Do I use them? Some, most I don't bother with.

8. What about the network?
I have a grandfathered account with unlimited data. So, now instead of being stuck with 3G on the iPhone, I have unlimited 4G LTE. For those of you not fortunate enough to have 4G, I'm sorry. It's insanely fast. My 4G hotspot rivals my hardwired ISP speeds. Best I've clocked on Speedtest.net was 27 meg down on 4G. My hardline runs between 30 - 33 meg down. You can't tell the difference. It's sick.

9. I thought Netflix on Android sucked.
Apparently it did prior to the Bionic (or maybe the Razr), but at any rate, it doesn't on this phone. With 4G (and my unlimited data plan) it rocks.

10. What about the camera?

To be honest, I haven't played with it much. What little I have played with it has taught me that the shutter is slow. The iPhone definitely has it beat here. As long as you're not trying to capture action shots, you'll be fine. Apparently, the video portion is really good, but I haven't bothered with that yet. I'm not a photo hound or videographer, so neither is real important to me.

11. Speakers?
Very good. Loud. Sound clarity is good, range lacks, but it's a tiny little speaker, what do you want from it?

The tl;dr version:

iOS 5 ruined my opinion of the iPhone. Got a Razr. Happy again. The end.

I have the Iphone, Razor looks bad ass tho, the screen is wide and really clear, I might have a change of heart soon.

Im in the market for a new phone and I still get a new one from Verizon for the 2 year contract.

Im not an apple fanboy either but have been considering the iPhone for 1 reason. They make so many accessories for it. I have the Droid X now and get jealous when I see all my friends with their cool accessories. Like my one friend has the dual battery case so he has twice the battery time. My little brother has a case that holds all of his credit card kinda like a wallet.

I like my droid. Im not into playing with the phones as much as some of these phone guys but I just want to be able to talk on it and snap pics of funny shit quickly so I post it to FB. I also want fast internet on my phone.

My accessories thing is a problem because Droid has so many phones and they will never just focus on one. Not like Apple with the same phone just updated every now and again.

I was about to settle for the iPhone but you got me thinking about this Razr? Hmm....

Couldn't agree more Mike, android is overall much better than iOS. After two years with an iphone glad I made the switch overall. It's not perfect , but I find it better overall.

It is my duty to inform everyone that Windows Phone is a fantastic OS.

This^ over Android.

I still prefer iOS though, haven't had any problems you mention Mike. Not sure what's causing the recording issue. As far as unwanted apps that are there by default, there might be a hack that removes them (no idea) but I just throw them on a random display section that I never look at. 95% of the time every app I use is on page 1, the other 4.9% is page 2, garbage is page 3.

I did attempt to convert to Android (Atrix, before the 4S has a dual core processor), and it was pretty cool but just didn't do it like iOS did for me. Less apps, more bugs. The touch screen decided to completely stop working for no reason, so that was the tipping point that made me convert back to my old-ass iPhone 3, then got the 4S when it came out. Happy.

The worst part about any iOS device is the lack of customization you can make, but to me that's overcome by the fact that most of the iOS defaults are the most efficient ways to run things. I've bought/customized a droid just as much as I've customized Windows 7 in bootcamp. It's "cool/sleek" for a while but eventually I return to iOS every time. Different strokes for different folks.

Jail breaks are plentiful for android, get a free app like bloat freezer and you can block all the crap that comes on it, not hard at all. It's what I do. Although new droid devises are coming with more and more ram making it a non issue.

Would never but a Motorola product, worked in wireless for years and they always put out the shittiest quality phones, hopefully its changed as of late.

I love my iPhone, does everything I need it to do. Not really sure why you are getting the recording problem, I've never once experienced that. And with the annoying icons, just throw them on your very back screen page.

Iphone is really crazy price with Standard specification in her class ...
Android have good price because I have Xperia arc :D

I owned 2 iphones and had similar issues (and a massive hate for itunes). Switched to a galaxy s2 and yeah it has it's own issues but it's way better.

But I didn't write a novel about it on WF though

I thought you were like me and went back to the dark days. This is the Razr I now use.

I have used the iphone 4 for a bit, but it doesn't compare with the Galaxy S2 that I got a week ago.

Android FTW!

You're not following this close are you douche bag? Didn't think so.

That's one way, though I treat my Android like a PC. When I receive it I flash the ROM so it literally has nothing that shouldn't be there.

Good for updates aswell. My phone came with 2.1, I'm now on 2.3.3. Still need to update to 2.3.7.

If you want to go down ^ that route - check out modaco.
