Why Isn't There a Second Road Test?

I'm sure many people have asked that question before, and I haven't looked into it, but why aren't old people retested to keep their license valid? If we require young people to posses the skill to parallel park, why don't require the same from old people who's senses and motor skills are severely deteriorating? It seems to be beyond common sense to me.

I personally think that once you hit a certain age, you should be routinely tested. Like from 60-80, once every 5 years. 80+, once every two years. 100+, fuck it, you deserve to do whatever the fuck you want.

Couldn't agree more.

My grandpa totaled his car with him and my grandmother in it 2 years ago. He shouldn't have been driving for probably 3-5 years, but seniors are stubborn about their licenses because they still have them and want to feel capable. I don't know how both of my gparents survived the crash, but he was completely at fault, making a left turn when he had a green light, but not a turning arrow from the turning lane. They got hit by a car going 50mph by a driver with no license .. which spun them and threw them into a pole.

Point of the story: He was completely at fault because his reflexes weren't there, and his judgement was not there.

RETEST SENIORS.

Discrimination I would guess, even though everyone in their right mind thinks that's how it should be. I think everyone has a story about nearly or actually being run off the road or hit by an old person.

I'm sure when your 60+ you'll still want to drive also, and if someone told you that you where not capable you'd be pissed also.

Another reason they want to drive is mobility. A lot of cities are designed with the assumption everyone is able to drive. Public transit sucks ass and in most places not even safe to use. Driving shouldn't be consider a privilege when not being able to drive basically means you can't work, get groceries, or other basic needs. You shouldn't have to make the choice of sitting next to cracks heads on a bus or fighting them at bus stops just to get to work. It's even worse for old people that can't even defend themselves.

Ya true, so instead of putting old people at risk of being mugged by a crackhead, put young people (the future) at risk of being killed by a senile driver.

The world isn't all rainbow flowers and fairies, humans are too physically shitty for everyone to be happy. Risk vs Reward.

I know in Japan they have different colored road signs they put on the car so you can have a general idea of how old the person who is driving is driving.

We got something like that here in the US, too. It is a little light near the taillight that blinks as they drive down the road.

Yeah, and especially if they have something major happen (ie. stroke). My grandpa went through two major strokes, three bouts of cancer, and had one leg cut off. Not sure if he still had his license or not, but he drove all over the small town. To his credit, he never went onto major roads or into the city, and just stuck within town. He couldn't even turn his head left though. He could check right, but then would just have to hope nobody is coming from the left.

This should not only be for old people.

There's also a shitload of young dumbfucks who have NO idea how to drive and should not be allowed on the road.

I dont see this as a form of discrimination, you could shove push it as a form of keeping the community or public safe from possible outside hazards, the government seems to chew that up when it involves the safety of people (only after something happens to maim, injure, scar, kill someone)

Or better just put all the old people in sleds, drag them in to a forest and leave them there. Problem solved.
