I have personally ranked for good KWs with many brand new sites of mine in competitive finance related niche with ALN in last 1 year.But,I do a lot of anchor text variation.(at least 4)
Also do inner page linking.(like,yoursite.com/page2)
I would recommend

LINK1: Target page (3-5 anchor text)
LINK2:Inner page(long tail key words with click here,your site name etc)
LINK3:Authority pages like wiki,youtube etc with some other anchor text
