I have some domain names I want to buy for keywords, but 90% of the keyword search volume is coming from other countries like malaysia, morroco, indonesia etc.

Will a .com in this scenario still be more valuable than a .whatever for those countries?

whatever for those countries.

If you want a longterm investment to stick.

I usually search their countries and see what already ranks. If its all gTLD's i go with the .whatever you said . if i see .com i might hit the .com

Since the beginning .com is #1. Every time a new extension comes out (xxx) people go nuts buying it but at the end .com is still the best game in town.

.com or the country specific domain(s) of the country/ies you are targeting are first choice, but .net or even .org are fine, too, just stay away from crap like .co, .ws, .info, .biz and so on.
