over here
Hi folks,

I'm new to this site but not new to learning about the whole internet marketing thing, i've always been interested in it and read lots of stuff about it. I've earned a bit building sites but never really threw myself into it. Anyway, circumstances have changed and I hate my current job. I'm getting out of it and the money i'm gonna make online will let me tell my current boss to keep the job cos I quit.

I was gonna keep an offline journal and post the whole thing a month in, but if this post is up i'm committed and have to do something rather than just read and over analyse.

I got an exact 2 keyword site. Keyword-keyword.com and it's a high searched term with high cpc, so i'm thinking start with adsense and some aff links.

Will keep you posted, next steps:
-template for site
-articles on keyword and longtails
-adsence and aff links
-get some links up

Speak soon,

viclai

Good luck, mate. I highly suggest that you have at least 4-5 forms of potential monetary streams for any site you build, you never know when one will slack off and the others will help.

On the same mindset, I don't suggest you tell your boss to suck it until your online income exceeds your off-line income for any less than 3-4 consecutive months as well as having money in your account to pay off 6 months of all your expenses. By then, you should also have a few other websites running as well in different niches.

Even when you do leave, do it on good terms. You never know when you'll need a reference or contact in the future. Contingency plans, you need multiple ones.

Thanks for the support folks, yeh I'm not planning on doing any ranting at my boss just yet, will have to bite my tongue for a while til I can actually afford to leave.

Thought I'd put a quick update on how I'm getting on:

set up the hosting and installed wordpress for my site

read through here and put a few plug ins on:
All in One seo
Banner Wizz
Contact Form 7
Cookie Law Info (site is based in UK, though hoping most visitors will be US)
Google XML Sitemaps
Limit Login Attempts
Login Lock
Official StatCounter Plugin
oik-privacy-policy
oik-base plugin
Quick adsense
secure wordpress
WP super Cache

have been doing quite a bit of keyword research (done a good bit before I bought the domain, but done some more since) here are a few details for exact match findings from google:

[2word keyword which is my emd with a hyphen]
competiton: 0.16 global monthly: 1600 local monthly(us): 720

[2word keyword but with an s at the end]
competition: 0.3 global monthly: 6600 local monthly(us): 2900

(There are quite a few more but i thought these were the most relevant to put here)

Funny, I wouldn't have thought that the "s" (the plural of the keyword) would have made such a difference. keyword-keyword2s.com is currently being sold for low$XXXX and i know that doesn't mean anything to the money in my pocket, but i would have thought that it would be a insight into the potential keyword-keyword.com (my site) would be.

I signed up to a free serpiq account and did some research. They're saying that my keywords are mid competition. But the (US) #9 #7 #4 #3 are low competition with minimal backlinks and pr. There are 2 sites under 1 year old in the front page too, which gives me a bit of hope too. They're also saying that the CPC is about $2 and unless I'm mistaken that's a good thing if i'm primarly gonna base this as an adsense/affiliate site; my plan would be to build some good articles and monetise initially with adesese/aff links and then a/b test in some of my own material as the site grows.

homework now is to get the articles written and up. so that there's something useful on the site.

Hi Folks,

brief update:

I've put up 10 handwritten articles on my top 5/6 keywords. Adsense have finally started showing ads on my site and I've been submitting rss feeds and submitting my site to everywhere I can get it.

I've respun some content and started some squidoo lenses with rss feeds to my posts on my site.

Planned next i'll be trying to get ahead of my articles so i can set them to publish in the future. Gonna do some spinning and keep with the lenses and get some links on other web 2.0s

As far as income? not a solitary cent... yet. It's tough working full time and two part time jobs as well as this but it's gonna be worth it - it has to be.

You're planning on making a living on a 10 page site with just adsense?

You might want to aim about a mile higher and you shouldn't consider the work you've done so far hard because you have a long way to go still.

I know that. I didn't mean what I've done so far has been hard work, i meant that it's hard work trying to get this up and running while i'm working a full time job and two part time ones. I need to get another way to make ends meet and that's what I'm trying to do with this. The time i want to be spending on getting everything done online has to be spent doing other things that actually bring money in right now.

This site is just a start, I may be a noob but I know i'm hardly gonna be a gazillionaire with just 10 pages. when i get this site bringing in good traffic and money I'll get other ones on the go. This thread was really only a log of how i get started.

Update:

Been keeping on with squidoo and posts, here are my top six keywords put through Rank Checker yesterday:

Capture29-06-12.JPG

Got an 86th position for 1 keyword on US google, and the 9,4,7, and 31 are for google.co.uk blog rankings.

Today my US google ranking has dropped for some reason, and #95 in uk google rankings. My uk google blog rankings have went up tho.

Capture30-6-12.JPG

I know these rankings aren't great - but are a great start for me and i'm learning as i go :)

As far as money - not a lot yet from adsense, would hope that once i get better rankings the clicks will increase.

ok very quick update:

not a lot has been happening with this site lately. I added the site to a load of RSS feed sites and more articles are just being dripfed into the site. I've been putting together squidoo lenses and hubpages to get the good links going. Gonna try to somehow incorporate facebook/twitter with this but I'm not sure if this niche will respond to that.

Getting a little money in from adsense but nothing worth even mentioning, but learning as I go so it's worth something for me.

Hi folks,

I know it's been a while since i put any sort of update up about this. But... I've been trying not to get too sucked into spending all my "free" time on forums and reading instead of WORKIN!

Put together a set of articles on this site and then spun them so i had more fodder for the likes of hubpages and squidoo (squidoo btw has turned out to be hateful with the "dupe content" crap - guess you reap what you sow, so i've rewritten the spun content i used on here)

in the mean time i thought i'd try a completely different niche... and have put together a blog that "borrows" content from other blogs and then tweet about this. I've put adsense and aff ads on the site and it's been putting a steady 30-40 new visitors/day and rising (best was 1st aug with 78).

The niche is news related to content tends to be very short lived but google has shown me some love and i've ended up on pg 1 for some strange longtails, but getting clicks through them. I've put together a couple of twitter accounts and made about 140 followers for my main account, which tweets the title of each new post with a link to the post.

It's not much but i had my first $1 day with this site on Wednesday with adsense. I'm really pleased cos it shows that i've figured out something, it's a case now of build up and repeat. $1 ain't much, but it's given me hope.

I've been looking at my visitor stats and most are new visitors, who don't really spend long on the site. I need to make my site somewhere that they'll want to return to.

So far I've been using twitterfeed to post my rss posts to twitter, but the bit.ly shortlinks have seriously stopped working from last night and are now timing out on me. I don't know why, initially thought some permalink or maybe cache problem so i've tried working at that but they're still not working. They seem to work again when i reset the permalinks, but with the same custom info that was already using. Any thoughts?

I've been collecting @_____ from followers by getting ifttt to email me the name in an email, just wondering the best way to use these? Had thought of maybe making some way that i could set up a list of random rss posts that say something like "can't believe you just said that" or "i agree" which could be matched up randomly with the @___ so people would feel like my account is being social with them (and maybe increase followers/clicks to my site)

Any thoughts/advice much appreciate!

viclai

PS: would cpa be a better way to monetise this traffic than cj.com aff links and adsense?

Hi Folks,

update on this site is that it's actually going pretty well. I've been adding unique content regularly and also tapped into rss feeds from other blogs in this niche, so my site is getting quite a size now.

I've set up a few IFTTT rules and used twitterfeed to keep a couple of twitter accounts active and Twitter has been huge in getting me traffic, but this means that the majority of my users are coming from mobiles. Adsense is paying out low for this site and the other affiliate links i've put on aren't really bringing in much. I had thought about going the content locker route, but has anyone had real success doing that with a primarly mobile audience? (surely it can't be readable on a small screen?)

What's the consensus of using an ad based short url? currently using bit.ly for links to posts on the tweets.

I'm averaging between 80 - 150 uniques per day now, so it is making progress!

for all you other noobs out there... quit reading and keep going!

PS: figured out the permalinks problem... don't set up permalinks with category and then use a plugin that removes category from your links! I got rid of the plug in as category in permalinks may help with my seo.

Regarding those articles that u dripfeed into your site , do u rewrite them? Or are you just posting the same article on your website?

I keep seeing the word "spun" in your descriptions of new work you're doing to build backlinks to the site. You might consider using original content for your first tier, especially since the site is new and these are your only backlinks. Why start out with a crappy foundation?

I'm writing a lot of original articles that I manually rewrite (same topic, but different sentence structure and words, order of points within article and tone etc) and then spinning my manual rewrites to use on squidoo etc.
