Brilliant Idea for Forum Owners

At least my n00b mind thought it was brilliant, but I have no idea if it's already being done or if it would work. Someone on another forum came up with this idea to boost revenues.

A lot of forums censor words they deem inappropriate. Usually the offending word is replaced with something like [censored]. What if instead it were replaced with [insertadvertlinkhere.com]? Obviously it would be a link to some advertisers site, or even an affiliate link instead of a useless [censored].

Thoughts?
 


Just a little off base idea... an affiliate plugin for forums... anytime a word gets mentioned, like a company name or product or service, an affiliate link is added to the word. So instead of curse words, you change other words into affiliate links automatically. I think bidvertiser does something like this, but their links are hella fuckin annoying.

the idea is good, but loyal forum users would get pissed pretty fast. I would anyway.

We tried it but it couldn't scale for our size. We ended up doing something custom.

Very cool, though and a great way to monetize if you focus on trying to improve user experience by linking to products and sites that people are already discussing.
 
Yes I have seen this as an affiliate wordpress plugin, I just cant remember...

What youre talking about for forums is in action at youngentrepreneur dot com but its for advertisers...
 
I was thinking of doing something like that on my forums like in-text advertising, but instead of using something like kontera, I would use my own scripts and affiliate links and when ever someone mentions a word it would then make them hyperlinked if it matches on of my affiliate link keywords, but then decided that it was to much work, but will now check this plugin.
