Would something that automated the downloading of inbox/spam folders from let's say most web based emails be something people would be interested in? Like hotmail junk?

If there was something like this, what would you want it to do? Look up whois? Check blacklist on the sender ip? Be able to look at headers?

Are you saying you'd be gathering these stats and compiling them across many users, or for each individual user?

Privacy and ethical issues aside (and there'd be many), one thing that I'd personally be interested in is seeing how many of my legitimate marketing emails end up in spam folders, and figuring out why.

If it's just personal junk folders, maybe identifying companies that are selling your info without consent?

I don't think it's stupid. I'd need to understand it better, and how exactly it could benefit me, but I see potential.

no I'm talking about a service that you come in, type in your login for your seed email, it gets your emails for you, and then can perform some analysis or just give you a quick view.

Well, private installs would be an option -- that is put it on your server instead of mine.
Also I wouldn't store seed user/pass.

I'd ask the guy who paid you to build it what the benefit is. He obviously wanted the data, he paid someone to create it, he'll have a good answer to that question.

He just said it helps him. Something about looking up the whois on the ip block, or perhaps it's the ease in which it loads the seeds? I'm not asking a lot for it. It does break down the seed checking process quickly. You see both the junk/inbox on the same page and everything is loaded so you can just click your way through 20 messages if you please.

Very, very, very little legit mail ends up in the spam folder. The math behind this is ridiculously complex.
