18 year old Toronto teen shot 9 times + tasered by Police... Sickening!

Huh? I was talking about the wannabe gangster in the OP, that's the only video that would be relevant.

Here, you said:

I think that perhaps he deserved a very light manslaughter charge due to the following with a gun (since Trayvon no longer posed a threat).

I inferred from your following statement that you were still talking about Zimmerman and there was another video that had emerged.

Sorry for the confusion.

One I didn't know that they even had guns in Canada, but they yelled at him like 5 times to drop the knife. If you look at the video, when the officer starts boarding the bus he starts towards him with the knife.

I wish we could see where the shots were hitting him. I wouldn't ask for them to shoot him in the arm holding the knife, because that could be asking for too much but if you can't hit someone in the shoulder at that range then you probably shouldn't be in charge of "protecting" anyone with your gun. Fuck, shoot him in the foot I bet he drops that knife real quick.

Does 9 times = 9 bullets pulled out of this kid's body because that's just shameful marksmanship. You either go for the disabling shot or the kill shot, neither should take 9 bullets.

armed with skittles

This (or mention of the hoodie - my other favorite red herring) is always a dead giveaway that the person didn't pay any attention to the actual evidence in the case.

He attacked the guy and was bashing his fucking head into the concrete. Fuck his skittles and fuck his hoodie - how many times are you legally required to let someone bash your head into the concrete before you are allowed to respond with force?

Don't answer that, it's a rhetorical question. The jury already answered it.

Ok, you know what, I started writing a reply, but then I did some more research into the case. The women's jewellery Trayvon had at school in a bag with a screwdriver, plus the history of graffiti, Zimmerman's previous record and the fact that he had his hand stuck in his waistband (which admittedly, is a little iffy, as he seemed to have a hard time identifying what clothes he had on, seeing whether he was reaching for a gun would be pretty much impossible) has swayed me. I think that perhaps he deserved a very light manslaughter charge due to the following with a gun (since Trayvon no longer posed a threat) but I've definitely been swayed, and as you say, 20:20 hindsight.

I applaud you for being open minded enough to change your position on it.

And really I find the specific case irrelevant. But I worry about the precedent that it sets, and also why the hell the media has latched onto it the way that they have.

But I disagree that he should be charged with manslaughter. And I've thought about various ways that it could have played out.

Maybe Zimmerman drew on him and Martin jumped on him in self-defense. But the evidence disproves that theory.

Maybe Zimmerman brandished the weapon. Highly doubtful though, if he was planning on using it he wouldn't let Martin get close enough to get the jump on him. And if someone is implying they'll use a gun unless you comply, very few people are going to attack instead of cooperate.

I've thought about just the fact that he was following him could be considered an act of aggression. But you're allowed to follow people. You're allowed to ask them questions. They don't have to respond, and they can ask to stop following them, but just following someone isn't an aggressive act.

And as Jake said "proven beyond a reasonable doubt"... None of the "what if" stories about Zimmerman add up. His story lines up with the evidence. He said "thank god" when police lied and told him they had it all on camera.

The fact that he was carrying a gun is irrelevant. He had every right to have a gun on him. Until it's pointed at, used to threaten or fired upon someone the gun doesn't matter. Just because you're carrying a gun doesn't mean you intend to use it.

From what I can tell, he was a guy trying to protect his community - because crime was a big problem there - it turned into an unfortunate situation and he was forced to defend himself.

Even a manslaughter charge would be implying that people have no right to defend their lives from those who initiate violence to harm or potentially kill them.

Self-defense is the most important fundamental human right. I personally consider it a moral obligation. If you care about yourself or have people that you love in this world, you can't rely on anybody else to protect you or your loved ones for you. That responsibility falls on every individual.

Self-defense isn't something that people should be punished for. If the police would have protected Zimmerman then Martin would be alive. If Zimmerman had relied on the police to protect him there's a good chance that he'd be the one who died that night.

I don't see a big deal. He forced the passengers off the street car at knife point...

Sammy made a stand and got shot, if a passenger had made a stand they would have been stabbed. Karma is a bitch.

*face value answer, nothing to do with precedents/police debate.

Not quite.

This kid was Arab (Syrian descent apparently, just like Steve Jobs). As you know, they're 100% American/Canadian when they do something good, they're Arab/Muslim when they don't. lol

This story is definitely not over.

This happened in Canada! No one cares what happens in Canada unless it has something to do with oil, hockey or skiing except the poor kids family and friends...I say last you hear about this story in US.

How many of you study gunfights and can tell me what the standard 'safe' distance is with a knife?

Tasers are only so effective.

cops are trained, well supposedly trained, that they can be moved in on by someone with a knife before they can pull their gun within 20 feet.

“I was on that bus, he took his penis out with one hand and a knife in another, threatening four girls and all the lives of people on that bus,” wrote Melody Garcia.

Also, security footage from a different angle than the video already posted shows him clearly coming towards cops with his knife.

Sooo this might not be the most popular opinion, but fuck him.

Cops should have just....

The police got to use their 'toy', which is called a gun. They don't get to use it that often these days.

For the kid, I guess he was going through problem of some kind, which ought to have been given proper attention by his peers, or his friends per say.

Maybe his parents weren't his best friends.

Maybe the people around him were too busy with their own lives.

Maybe he's a loner. Or a drug-addict.

This has become a social problem which manifests itself in different forms, at different places, in just about every goddamn week .

I'd blame it on the noticeable 'degradation' of our family life.

It all starts with our family!

Not sure what buses look like in your country, but TTC Streetcars are not buses....

...anyway, beside the point.

I'm generally one who thinks most shits like this deserve what they get (threatening innocent people with a knife on public transport), and this kid looks like he had (some) of it coming his way....

....but also of the opinion that the cop crossed the line. After the initial 3 shots, he paused for a fair amount of time. The following 6 shots were completely unnecessary.

There's another video from a security camera, which shows a better angle - after the first 3 shots, the kid was down....at that point that should've been more than enough to have incapacitated him, and secured the scene.

Gotta love the fact the cop now has a paid vacation (yep, suspended with pay).

I appreciate the sentiments people have voiced, it's possible there could have been a different resolution that wouldn't have left the kid dead.

I wonder how many posters here have actually had shots fired at them? Granted the kid had a knife, but perspective changes rapidly when you hear rounds go by or otherwise feel your life is in danger. Walk a mile in the shoes and all that.
