Copy Protection Used Now On Web Sites

When did it become possible to prevent someone from copying text off of a web page? I see this done more and more now by web site owners of larger sites where you get a pop up warning and you literally can't use Cntr+C to copy something.

Is this some snazzy new Javascript or something?

I hate it when the bank's online banking site also has that annoying javascript window popup telling you that the use of your right mouse button has been disabled. This is popular in Hong Kong at least, and it's total amateur hour. It's like a script you'd have on a geocities or angelfire site, not a bank.

Plus it's pathetically easy to bypass.
