Each year the Girl Scouts do this fund raiser thing with magazines. That means each year I order magazines from my daughter.

I ordered a few techie magazines, discover, etc..

In the last few days I've gotten:

Rolling Stones

Cosmo

U.S. News

(still haven't seen a techie magazine, maxim, or discover....)

So - if you want to know what the fucking bands that I'm to old to know about are doing (or Obama since he is on the cover), some makeup tips, or what britney is up to I'm your man.

Don't get me started on the goddamn fund raiser crap. Girls scouts or Baseball or whatever, fine, have a fund raiser. You know when you're signing your kid up for these extra activities that they will have something like that. But every freakin month my son brings home some packet of stuff to sell for school. Stop using my 6 year old to raise money for fuck sakes, it's twisted! Plus He doesn't understand why I don't let him do it,he winds up in tears and I"m the bad guy cause I refuse to guilt my friends, family and co workers in to giving us money everymonth for cookies or pie that they don't even want. UGG.

You can be my new hero. I totally agree. Private school or public?

Wow, I'm really not looking forward to dealing with this hit when I become a parent someday.

Public School! I'm constantly reminded of this quote:

But you know what? Have a bake sale, have a freakin carnival to raise money, that's fine! Just don't make my kid do it for you! Plus you know only a "portion of the proceeds" go to the school the rest goes to making some company rich off of 6 year olds that really want to get the god damn cracker jack prize after they've earned 300 dollars.

Tell you what, how bout you give my kid the 300 dollars HE EARNED and then we'll donate a portion of the proceeds to your school. What 3 % ? Isn't that about what you get anyway?

I think the girl scouts hate my ass.

I ordered cookies from a coworker who was selling them for one of her kids/relatives, and I never got them. They just ignored me. And I was looking forward to some Caramel Delights. Damn.

Oh well.

I've still got about 800 boxes in my garage they didn't sell. Let me know what you need and how many boxes :) (kidding - I think that actually violates the GS rules and would cause all sorts of stuff to go down). They have more rules than the IRS.

My wife is a troop leader - and the Girlscouts aren't bad - one month of selling cookies and we are done. They do the magazine thing too - but the girls just really need to put addresses on a form. They get more if someone buys the magazines - so I drop a couple hundred a year on stuff I want anyway.

That's it - sort of like a CPL ad :)

The girls get like 70 cents a box (out of 3.50).

The schools are nuts - I don't let the kids do it anymore either. Hell my kids pre-school sent one home last week.

I'm willing to donate - just ask - but I hate spending 40 bucks so the school gets 5.

Ugh, I remember doing that shit back in middle school. Fucking door to door candy sales.
Looking back, I don't think it was reasonable to expect a 12 year old to sell $5,000 worth of semi-edible chocolate in exchange for a 12" TV.

The worst part of the whole thing was the parents who treated it like a competition. They'd drag their kids all over town, just so they could brag about how their kid sold the most.

WTF I used to do this shit lol. I forgot all about it. I think I got like first place once for getting the most sales(I just went door to door). I got a free bike that broke less than a year later and was never really ridden on because it was too big for me at the time.

now that I think about it, I bet they get so much money doing this.

In Australia Cadbury's are the main purveyor of these sorts of things.
I've looked into it before, and the charity group gets only 25% of the proceeds. It's pretty fucked up considering that the schools could get a much better profit margin by buying the chocolates wholesale, but then it doesn't come in those special boxes with neck straps and have a sale-or-return policy attached.

But yeah, using primary school kids is a seriously emotional blackmail way of doing it.
I remember when my primary school did it. I just ate all the chocolate because I didn't really understand the point of it at the time. My parents had to shell out $50 for the 20 chocolate bars I'd eaten and they weren't happy.

I'm kind of surprised that there isn't some sort of opt-out clause... Especially because it's really child labor.

Soooo.... Adhesive Medical Strips, anyone? (please, someone get that reference)

These fund raisers are only good for the cookies and chocolate. Even then, they cost an arm and a leg... and a second arm.

Girl Scout: "Would you like to buy some cookies sir?"
ChrisS: DO I LOOK LIKE I WANT A COOKIE, YOU LITTLE WHORE?!"
Girl Scout: *silence*

Problem solved.

I choose not to answer that question on the grounds that it may incriminate me.
