My AM is asking for something to show where my traffic is coming from. I am using a page that won't give away my back links. I let him know I was using PPC.

What do I show him without giving him my ad copy or keywords? Is this any of his business?

Go into your statistics / weblogs package.

Look up "traffic source"

Voila!

I am not giving away my traffic source. My real question is, what should I tell them without giving away any secrets? I put a too much research into this to just give away anything.

Or move to another network. They're a dime a dozen and you can probably re-negotiate a better payout based on you already have traffic.

Then your traffic will disappear and the guy will say what happened? Then tell him you said you were running ppc and that wasn't good enough so you moved on.

You own the traffic == you have the upper hand.

I don't like his question...sounds weird to me. Is this a precursor to "we decided not pay you"....you know? Or they want to take over your campaign and run it themselves. I wouldn't share my source...I don't trust anybody...even AMs! Good Luck...let us know what happens.

Just give him very basic information. Tell him you are doing PPC using the big three. There really isn't any reason he should need any more information than that regarding your traffic sources unless maybe it's a quality issue but then usually he would say that upfront. If he still wants more just tell him you are not giving away which keywords you use and that's the only other information you could possibly have to give to him. I would also ask exactly what his concern is for asking for this information.

Do your research here on Networks that don't pay, if its one of them I would be concerned.

That's a red flag quetion.

I work for an affiliate program on CJ, and the network only inquires about traffic source when they suspect fraud. The good thing about CJ is that the merchants cannot see the query strings from referrers. The only people who can are CJ's network quality department, and they will not release this information to advertisers under any circumstances (even cases of clear cut fraud from Chinese IP addresses...). So, the only network I'd ever trust with that kind of info is CJ.

We broker some of our offers through affiliate networks. I ask for traffic source when I suspect fraud or the quality is rock-bottom. I ask this not because I want your keywords or ad copy (I have an in-house team that does that already, and there's very little you will have come up with they haven't already tried), but because I want to ensure you are not doing anything that is tricky/misleading/fraudulent. And, if you are, I want to work with you to tweak the copy/kw in a way that will improve quality instead of just cutting you off.

I used to be asked all the time and I would simply reply with vague answers like: well, it comes from many different sources, search, web traffic, and a bunch of PPC to my landing page. And then if they ask what specifically I will just basically tell them it's complex and it follows all of the TOS of the advertiser and network.. They usually just don't talk about it from then.
