what kind of link building do you prefer?

I have a blog in a dating niche which I'm trying to rank, and it has good content. I started the blog about 6 months ago and got a 1000 backlink directory submit package and a social bookmarking page.

Not sure if it has had any real effect on my blog, when I type in my domain in google I only get 290 results and about 50 of those pages are mine. So, from a 1000 directory links only about 200 links stuck?


I've heard people say directory links don't really count much anymore or some people haven't noticed any effects.

So, what would you suggest I try next? Another social bookmarking package from somebody else? Article submits? or PR Links? Any other suggestions?

Did you alternate the anchor text and destination URL with the submissions? Whenever I have a directory submit I make sure the guy doing it for me uses deep links from my site with an alternate anchor text which matches the targeted keyword on that specific page.

But yeah directory submissions are pretty weak. I still get them done occasionally, but they won't hold much value when they already link to thousands of other sites in your niche.

No, I didn't do any of that but, I can see how it could help.

So besides directory submits what would you recommend?

Well that's the thing with link building - you've got to be creative. You can post links, buy links, spam links, bait links, request links, etc. It depends how serious you are, how much time and money you are willing to invest, and how skilled you are (in the case of black hat seo you've got to know what you're doing). This is why some people prefer PPC while others like to focus on SEO.

Well, I was trying to decide if I should go with purchasing PR links, article submits, or more social bookmarking.

I'm kind of leaning towards article submits (from somebody reputable) but, I might need to get more feedback if article submits work or not, before I try it.

So far, I got some advice to contact the dating sites in my niche that my blog is related to and see if they will link to me. I e-mailed a few so far I got a response saying it would be ok. I'll see what a few more of the sites say. In exchange I'm going to promote their offer on my blog but, I'm wondering if they link to me and then I have an affiliate banner to their site if that will count as a reciprocal link? I'll do a meta-refresh domain redirect if that will help but, I'm not sure if that would work.

It depends. Google can follow an affiliate link to the destination. I know that's the case with Clickbank links for example, which is why Clickbank publishers tend to rank so well for their own product names despite all the competition from their affiliates. So bearing in mind that the affiliate link could be seen as a normal link pointing to their site, I would avoid it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Not really sure what to do next. I want to keep this WH. With directory submits not weighing. Maybe I'll try article submits next. This is the company I was thinking of, SEO Service

This is not my company or I'm trying to promote them or anything like that. I think they've promoted their services on here before. It looks all legit to me but, I'm not sure how good article marketing works.

The problem with any of these WH methods it seems is that you have to hit it hard which is going to require an investment. If I purchase a $30 article submit it's not going to do anything. I'm not sure if this investment is going to be worth it in the end. I'm doing well in this niche on PPC just don't see how I'm not seeing the same results through SEO.

Have you tried doing guest posts on blogs?
Creating viral video?
Offering a service in exchange for a link?

I mean there's so much I can say. And the ways you can go about getting links also depends on the type of site you have and what niche you're in.

No, haven't done any of that either. Sounds like too much time/effort. Think I should probably just stay with PPC. Maybe I'll just keep purchasing links for this blog but, it seems they aren't going to really do anything.
 
The answer is you want diversification. That looks the most natural in google's eyes. Avoid getting sitewide links. Those don't look good. Like I mentioned in the other thread, if the keywords you're targeting are mid to low competition, you can dominate them just by having your links appear in buried content (which looks natural) across blogger's blogs. There is a service for that called bloggingads.com. Contact the sales department.
 
this seems to be the order we generally follow at the moment:

auto free directory subs
paid directory subs (manual)
Social Book Marking (auto)
Blog buys (auto)
Article Subs (auto)
Targeted Link buy requests
more complicated stuff such as creating specific link bait, via competitions, widgets, etc etc etc...

may have forgotten something. It was off the top of my head.

what Benahue said was bang on... mix it all up to make it look natural.
