Any eBay affiliates ever tried building a site around a specific eBay store rather than around a given niche? I was scanning eBay's "What's Hot?" page yesterday and got thinking about it as I was looking at the top stores in each niche.

eg. if you do a search on eBay for something general and popular like "Wii" you get over 40,000 listings, from all kinds of sellers, and listings are kind of all over the place and competing with one another.

<![CDATA[wii]]>

But if you narrow the search by seller and run it just through BIS, the largest storefront on eBay, you get a more concise, "inventory-like" list of listings:

<![CDATA[wii]]>

There's also an added plus in that the seller is a long-established seller with a feedback score well over 100,000.

Anybody doing eBay sites ever tried to build around specific sellers rather than around a given product, brand or niche?

Actually I am working on something very similar to this. You will like it even more than what you are talking about. I plan to launch a test run on Monday the 14th. I will follow up with the test. I wish I could speak more about it but I want some data to back up my discovery.

Cheers

I know you have an option in phpBay to limit the results to a seller's id or something like that so I am sure others have used it. Good idea to target sellers with high marks, might make them more likely to bid on the auction.

Look forward to seeing your results.

It's an eBay search option, so any app that didn't include it would strike me as crap. One can use the eBay advanced search to create (among other things) highly geolocalised feeds which in turn can be used to create nifty classified ads sites by running the feeds through WordPress or Joomla. I did a few of these before, monetised by finding a local retailer in the market who would pay for site-wide header ads. Not bad results, just not worth pursuing with any ardor.

Short version (too late!) is that eBay's advanced search parameters, as in narrowing by store or by geo, may end up being the differentiating factor in making an eBay site work, now that everybody's doing eBay sites.

Well most people use ebay already, for buying a lot of different things. The user probably found your site because they were interested in buying that item anyways. Yes it is good if they actually buy the item that you linked them too, but the best goal is to place your cookie. Just getting the user to click an item to land your cookie. Then just hope for two things. 1, they buy something within 7 days. 2, they don't clear their cookies. I don't care if every one of my visitors didn't buy the item I linked them to, just as long as they buy something within 7 days using the cookie I deployed. I hope to god that they buy a car or something. Better yet, a pair of Britney Spear's worn panties for 1million. As long as they buy anything with my cookie I'm happy.

building sites around specific stores is a really good idea. Youd be surprised how many people go to google to search for an ebay seller. Now all you have to do is intercept :)

I was going to say something similar to shudogg. My goal is to unleash more cookies than Girl Scouts. I would assume this would be everyone's intention...do you think centering around ebay stores will have a more positive impact on that goal?

Edit: Damnit, now I'm craving Thin Mints.

Something else which occurs to me here is that one could selectively eliminate stores that use Vendio and other third-party companies that screw with your affiliate cookie. In and of itself that's a reason to try it.

I have a case study for this idea under development; will post it up in a few weeks when it's online.
