Is that a Mom-friendly choice?

She's just gonna surf & email. Maybe upload her digi-cam pics.

Should I spend more for a system capable of running Vista smoothly or is a $550 Dell w/Ubuntu a solid system for a noob?

It's good until she calls her local ISP for tech support, or her friend sends her the XLS/DOC file, etc.

So long as you have remote access (VNC) and can support her real time she'll be just fine.

Photos from any USB enabled camera should work just fine. Just don't expect mom to not call you, because she will, a lot.

PS - my mom sucks in this arena. fuck you B.

My mom uses a PC with Ubuntu on it. Just make desktop shortcuts for all the programs she will use and rename them (change firefox to Internet, etc.).

No, like a good son, you'll get her an Acer laptop installed with Windows ME.

Find someone that is selling XP on a decent machine. Lenovo or HP or something.

Run updates for her. Remove the junk. Do the Windows Service Pack 3 if it was not done and hand it over.

You wont get a lot of calls. XP is solid and familiar. Runs good with 1 gig or even 512mb RAM.

Ubuntu for normal computer users is categorically worse than xp and mac os. That's why it's not even close to being a serious player in the desktop market.

Who said they need to be a serious player to have a great OS for moms/elderly/mildly retarded? For that the OP wants, Ubuntu is just fine so long as he supports her.

Not really. It offers nothing for the normal user that XP does not.

Why would you want to give her an OS that requires constant coaching, has pathetic support for most windows apps, and has lousy support for most peripheral hardware like cameras and such, when you could just install XP?

Because you're a ubuntu fanboi and want to force square pegs in round holes. That's why.

You of all people should know the ones in life who make the most bank are the ones who manage to fit square pegs into round holes.

Email/Internet is what she needs, Ubuntu <jedi wave> WILL <wave/> do fine.

Why would Excel or Word files cause a problem on a linux machine? Open Office is standard with Ubuntu distros and handles all microsoft files just fine.

Ubuntu is fine as long as she doesn't need to install additional programs. And to whoever asked what linux does that xp doesn't - it stays pretty much virus/malware/worm/root kit free, which is a big bonus for people that don't know what the hell they are clicking on.

I use XP 90% of the time, but my son is 10 and I make him use the linux box. Why? No viruses from downloading stupid shit to the computer. Just a thought.

No, it's the ones who find the matching square holes who make the money. Your type is just a bunch of stubborn fucks who's arrogance is inflated by some unknown motivator, despite the fact that you have thusfar failed to do anything remotely useful with your life.

Just one example of thousands that prove you're a know-nothing wet-behind-the-ears basement-boi. There was a time where you didn't sit in front of a computer in your mother's basement (yes, you do live with mommy still, right?) playing WoW and making interwebz monies.

Guys like Kroc fit a square into a circle, then a triangle, then the rest of the shapes and defined an industry. What have you done chinmasta?

Ray Kroc, McDonald's, And The Fast-Food Industry

In 1954, a fifty-two-year-old milk-shake machine salesman saw a hamburger stand in San Bernardino, California, and envisioned a massive new industry: fast food. In what should have been his golden years, Raymond Kroc, the founder and builder of McDonald's Corporation, proved himself an industrial pioneer no less capable than Henry Ford. He revolutionized the American restaurant industry by imposing discipline on the production of hamburgers, french fries, and milk shakes.

By developing a sophisticated operating and delivery system, he insured that the french fries customers bought in Topeka would be the same as the ones purchased in New York City. Such consistency made McDonald's the brand name that defined American fast food. By 1960, there were more than 200 McDonald's outlets across the country, a rapid expansion fueled by low franchising fees. Ray Kroc had created one of the most compelling brands of all time. But he was barely turning a profit. Ultimately, it was his decision to use real estate as a financial lever that made McDonald's a viable operation. In 1956, Kroc set up the Franchise Realty Corporation, buying up tracts of land and acting as a landlord to eager franchisees.

With this step, McDonald's began to generate real income, and the company took off. Kroc then introduced national advertising programs to support the rapidly proliferating franchises, and when it appeared that growth in the company's home territory was slowing in the early 1970s, he started an energetic and successful push to make McDonald's a global presence. Throughout the company's spectacular growth, Kroc maintained a delicate balancing act, imposing rigorous system-wide standards while encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit that welcomed ideas from all levels. Many of these ideas contributed to the company's astonishing success.
In amassing a $500-million fortune, the king of the hamburger transformed the nation's cultural landscape and forged an industry that is among America's greatest exports.

The widely imitated success of McDonald's offers an excellent example for today's managers and executives searching for greater production efficiencies. By putting the humble hamburger on the assembly line, Kroc showed the world how to apply sophisticated process management to the most prosaic endeavors. To succeed the McDonald's way, companies must define the basic premise of the service they offer, break the labor into constituent parts, and then continually reassemble and fine tune the many steps until the system works without a hitch.

Today, companies engaged in delivering pizzas, processing insurance claims, or selling toys benefit from the kinds of systems that Ray Kroc pioneered. To the degree that such operations maintain quality control, and cherish customer satisfaction, profits may flow.

You're not wrong, but my point was unless his mom knows about such things, she'd likely have problems. Even though .doc/.xls is supported, sometimes files just don't come over cleanly. I personally can't wait until my boys are old enough to use a real laptop, not the playskool toys they have now!
