I've noticed a lot of members don't like to spell it out for some reason, is there any particular reason for this? is G monitoring what certain forum logins are saying about them or something?

I don't think so, because plenty of people do spell it. I think it's like calling IBM "Big Blue". Google's too busy to worry about a gay webmaster forum, anyway.
