but honestly...for a campaign like zwinky...or pin submits...content network clicks are usually too expensive right?

i just dont get how i see people taking over an image ad on the content network for something that pays just a few bucks CPA...assuming they have 100% increase in payout bump...its still impossible to get the conversion rates needed...

No not necessarily, in my experience. It really depends on a bunch of factors such as CTR and placements, but I get several thousand clicks/day for as low as $0.03 and $0.04 with image ads - I've even heard of people getting $0.01 clicks with good volume (though I've never been able to.).

You might want to check out Dave Szetela'scolumn over at SEW, he has a lot of great articles specifically about the content network including bidding strategies and placement targeting. It's helped me a out a lot.

Yeah but keep in mind it really depends what your targeting and how you do it. Obviously you're not going to get cheap clicks with a weak image ad on a keyword targeted campaign using keywords such as "free credit report" and "acai berry".

That's very interesting. This makes me think you could hurt your impressions if you have keywords themed towards 'boats', 'boat anchors', 'ski boats' when your ad text is about free credit reports.

What happens then?
This would hurt your CTR more than anything. Google would still place your ad on boat and boat anchor related pages, but your ad text deals with free credit reports. The major theme of your ad group keyword and ad text words combined tells Google where the ad should go.

However, I guess if you only had one keyword in the adgroup, say "boat anchors" and your ad said "free credit report" - Google would have a hard time deciding what sorts of pages you actually wanna target.

What about this strategy... going after a broad range of keywords then checking your tracking to see which domains are getting you the conversions and launching a placement targeted campaign based on that data?

This is exactly what you wanna do and what most successful content advertisers do. Over time you gather valuable data of what sites that really convert for your ads. Then break them off into their own placement campaigns and maybe even custom make some new image ads JUST for those sites/urls ;)

here's my situation, I use keyword content campaign, bid 0.20 and getting conversions on Site A and making profit. Then I do site targeting and want my ad to appear on Site A. Problem now is, I get very little impressions even bidding at 0.40/click. What should I do?

While this make sense, it contradicts what Mr. Websites says here. Makes it confusing.

I try to target keywords that are vaguely similar to the generic things that my target demographic would search; without bidding on keywords relevant to the offer/product itself. You should be able to get clicks for dirt cheap.
