Let this be a warning to anyone thinking about running a shitty blog acai/colon campaign on myspace.
On December 21 I set up [URL REMOVED ON REQUEST] and tracking with prosper202. It was modelled after my buddy's landing page which he's doing well with. Looks ok, right? I then made 12 advertisements, and launched campaigns for both of them across two accounts on MySpace with CPC of $0.35-$0.37. They weren't catching on, though, so I raised the daily spend on a few to $75.00. I lost a bit of money on December 24th, but it was Christmas Eve so I just paused them.
I turned them back on again the afternoon of the 26th. All of a sudden campaigns were exploding, but I still only had a few hundred clicks so I raised the limit of more campaigns to $50.00, thinking I was only at a loss (I had made 2 conversions for about $100 spend) because of lack of enough data.
Yesterday evening, campaigns kept exploding, and tracking202 showed $150 spend (thanks myspace for not having a total spend feature!!) so I kept pushing. Finally I got my third-and what would be my final-sale. Still, tracking202 only showed like $180 spend so I was only down $80 and kept pushing. I noticed that about 50/1000 (or 5%) were clicking through my LP to the offer. So I looked at my buddys landing page, which is actually converting, and noticed he had one of those onLeave javascripts. So I added one last night and let it sit.
Wake up this morning, and there's about 200 more clicks and about 4 of them through to the offers. No conversions.
So I've made $100. Ok but I only spent $200 right? Wrong. I go into my PayPal and notice myspace has taken out $437. HOLY SHIT! I was not planning for this.
Someone suggested MySpace may have overcharged me, but for 1200 clicks at $0.35, that should be about $450. I also added up the charges of all 24 campaigns and got $431 (so they overcharged me $6??). For some reason tracking202 estimated the CPC at $0.20 even though I had entered it at $0.35 and $0.37 for all the campaigns.
So the morals of the story?

- Don't rely on one tracking system to show your spend.
- Don't keep increasing spending thinking there's strength in numbers. Get conversions first, then increase.
- DEAR MYSPACE: Stop working on your fucking piece of shit flex graphing systems, and make an overview page so I know how much I fucking spent. Dickwads.
- If you are going to run a weight loss blog, your primary concern should be getting visitors to click through to your offers. You can get 1000 hits, but if only 50 click through to your offers, what's the point?
