After being with bluehost since May of 2007, I got this e-mail not 10 minutes ago:

Eh. 7-15k uniques a day shouldn't be bogging down a server. Should it?

I mostly appreciate that there wasn't any warning, notice, anything. Just black.

More annoyance than anything. My money sites are on different hosts.

I checked into it, and there are 904 domains hosted on the same host as PYSIH.COM (on your shared web host). Now, imagine 904 domains pulling 15k hits pr day. That is over 13,5 million hits pr day.
 
I know crap about dedicated hosting. I don't know what my requirements are, other than I need cPanel and enough resources to run PYSIH and about 70 or so other small sites. I don't know enough to admin my own server. I would, in fact, like the new host to transfer the files from the old host.

After reading the dedicated server thread in the affiliate forum, right now I'm leaning between the Planet (https://www.theplanet.com/servers/rtg/) AYKSolutions (AYKsolutions.com - Enterprise-level dedicated servers and shared hosting) and Softlayer (Single Processor Multi-core Servers). Whoever points me in the right direction (how much server do I need, how much should I pay) with a good reason why I should pick that particular host, I'll sign up for it tomorrow morning through their affiliate link.

You could probably get away with using a VPS. LiquidWeb has some excellent fully managed VPS servers for between $60-100.

How much bandwidth are you using?

I can't imagine that I'm using all that much bandwidth.

The problem is, until I get home I'm not going to be able to access anything to see if they've cut off my access to cpanel. Kind of sucks.

I don't mind paying $200 or so a month for a no-headache solution. I just don't want the headache, and don't know a damn thing about server processors or setups other than what I learned through 3+ shared accounts.

Your site has too much going on. If you're using wordpress you should install the super-cache plugin. A query happens every time there is a request to access your mysql database. Your site could be making dozens of queries each time a single visitor loads your page. The more queries you have, the harder the server works.

7k-15 visitors a day times dozens of queries per page load = your site meets the banhammer.

I'd get a VPS if you don't want to shell out for a dedicated host.
 
I think it might be because I'm running the wp-polls plugin on every article.

Hell, I think I had more than 33k comments...

Used about 100 gb of bandwidth in December.

I wouldn't mind spending $200 if I get something that comes with no headache.

Grab a server from the Planet. You can configure it with Cpanel, Ensim or Plesk, whichever you like. I'd just go for the most box you can get within your budget, but you can always call up one of their sales people, describe your needs and budget, and have them make a suggestion.

I also highly recommend Singlehop. Their customer support is great.

I've dealt with over 40 hosts since '99. That includes shared, virtual, and dedicated boxes. I currently have a VPS with LiquidWeb and have never had a better experience. That includes dedicated boxes with Planet and Rackspace. I've called them at all hours of the day and night. They're always there and happy to help.

Their philosophy seems to be, "If you can do it, great. If not, call us. We'd be happy to take care of it for you."

Seriously, if you're not completely sold on moving things to HawkHost, take a peek at Liquid.
 
Yeah, I'm leaning in that direction. Plus they offer free migration. Gotta call them in the morning. Just need to know how much processor and how much ram I'd need.

The problem with liquidweb is that their best VPS - the Premium (https://www.liquidweb.com/cart/content/vps/VPS/Plan2) only comes with 100 gigs of HD space as the top option. Right now I've got a backup that's 150 gigs.

Is your 150 gig backup a single backup or months of daily backups? If it's months of daily backups there's no reason to keep them all... just take a single backup and move it.
 
If you don't know how to manage a server make sure you go with a managed host like Liquid Web. Otherwise someone's going to root your server in a couple of weeks, you'll never know, then other hosts are going to have to deal with your server being used for a DDoS or SPAM.

For dynamic scripts avoid Celeron processors as they just aren't built for it. The new Xeon processors are really nice. Get as much RAM as you can afford and use it for MySQL caching. Try to move things like session tables from MyISAM to HEAP to avoid writing to disk and slowing down the process. You'll never be able to do that on shared hosting though as the data is stored in RAM.

ROFL you're trying to run a 7-15k/day site on shared hosting? Hostgator would have cut you off within a week haha.

Seriously dude, just get managed dedicated hosting - that is exactly what you need.
