Just read http://www.wickedfire.com/affiliate-marketing/58581-copying-competitors-landing-pages.html and was disturbed & confused by what xmcp123 was discussing. The 2 quotes below are taken from these posts

"Second, I guarantee there's dozens and dozens of people on this board who could fuck every campaign you have so hard you'd be out of biz for good."

"What I'm saying is that it is solely because of the ethics of people more skilled than yourself that you are able to run them at all."

I'd like to know what he's referring to on how these skilled guys can fuck up our campaigns/biz? Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves?

And why doesn't this happen non stop since I would think most guys want money and would take you out just for being a competitor regardless if you copied or not. Why would they let people who didn't copy them take money and market share?

Is this about hacking into your competitors server and fucking shit up? Clickbombing, reporting sites to host, giving them fake leads, putting their affiliate links in bad neighborhoods, what? Putting people out of biz for good, would seem like you get the person banned from every network. Which is a scary thought if this is your job and skilled guys can take you out of biz anytime they wanted.

The posts by xmcp123 seem to be saying that guys have the ability to completely shut down anyone from running campaigns. But because of ethics they don't use their ability. But this doesn't make sense since you would think a few guys would just want to fuck shit up and keep all the money for themselves by wiping out all competition? Do ethics really stop these guys from taking out every single competitor they have or is there a lot more work and time involved in doing whatever it is that will result in them destroying your campaigns and biz? There would be utter chaos in the affiliate world if it were that easy.

They also have better things to do with their time if you're not being a total fucktard.
I don't feel like explaining too much.
But how about this(as an example): Do you think facebook's clickfraud problem would've ever gotten into techcrunch, or facebook would ever do anything if it was only affecting one person?

FEAR! UNCERTAINTY! DOUBT!
RUN AWAY!

[what i mean is, don't worry about "these skilled guys." worry, instead, about xmcp123. he won't just cook you and your campaigns, he'll eat your first born son for lunch, and use his ensuing turd to fertilize his personal crop of acai berry.]

First born sons for lunch are what gives my hair it's softness(note: works best if mixed with acai berry)

To me its all about money, and time spent messing with competitors is time not spent earning money. There is limitless potential and untapped sources of traffic and income. In both the short and long term, spending time fucking with competitors will cost me money I could have otherwise been making, and anyone with a brain realizes this.

So I'd say its more about opportunity cost than ethics.

Basically, people can do two things to you:

1.) "Black-hat" SEO better than yours, thus bumping your sites off page 1 and making them useless if you're an SEO marketer. If you read about the network available to, say, Eli of bluehatseo.com, there's little doubt that if he wanted to use that for evil he could do so. What can you do to defend yourself? Well... better SEO.

2.) Outbid you in PPC. People with a ton of money can easily find out what you're bidding on, and bid higher such that you get almost no traffic. They'll lose money doing this more than likely (or they'd be bidding on it already, nothing to do with you), but not as much as you -- as with their account history and spend, they get much lower CPCs than you. All you can do about this is maintain good QS, and move on to something else if targeted.

So why don't these gods of IM spend all their time taking out competitors? Well, because it costs money, uses their time, and accomplishes little. There are hundreds of thousands of marketers out there, and tons of niches and money. Why would someone who makes $10,000/day if he spends it asleep instead choose to spend all day fucking with you? It's pointless -- there's 10,000 of you, and in the time they spend fucking with you they could have, instead, made another $10k.

In other words, unless you're a very visible Class A dick, you have little to worry about.

WTF are you talking about? Get some rest, don't try to explain things that you don't understand.

Click fraud on a massive scale. Also continuous, unrelenting, DDoS attacks on your site. Zombie/Slave PC's and huge botnets controlled by such a person could simultaneously destroy your campaigns through click fraud and shut down your site through denial of service attacks.

Such a case was recently report on MSN adcenter where someone used just these methods to charge over $750,000 to their competitors accounts via click fraud, effectively taking them out of the niche and propelling their own site to the top.

Of course, they were caught by Microsoft and are now being sued, here is the article:

WoW Gold Sellers Sued by Microsoft for Click Fraud

you have no idea what you are talking about. Outranking / Outspending is not what is meant by affiliate sabotage.

A lot of the shit that "can be done" doesn't even need to be mentioned here.

If anything most niches on SEO are companies vs affiliates... Not necessarily affiliates vs affiliates. Obvious exceptions are acai berry, resv, etc but if I see an affiliate in my space i usually approach for a way to help us both up.

That is not at all what I meant.

I'll simply steal the enter key(s) on your keyboard...

good luck getting anything done THEN motherfucker.

if this is the first time you have felt a sense of paranoia, you need to read the news more often. Yes, someone out there has the power to destroy you with the press of a button and there is nothing you can do about it.

To the OP - be very scared. As soon as you questioned Shady, or "XMCP123" as you call him, he began tapping into Echelon to monitor your every move. He's got you triangulated and pinned down, so you best watch your step.

No, seriously. The last guy that didn't believe had a real time video of himself picking his nose as he was reading the thread in WickedFire posted on the same thread he was reading. Seeing the look in his eyes when that shit popped up was priceless...

Keep your head down, don't look anyone in the eyes, and just keep working for as long as you are allowed to.
