I heard that for a lot of media networks (like Zango, Mediatraffic etc) they will take over your high converting ad campaigns and give you the boot.

Is there any way to combat this? Maybe use 3rd party tracking instead of what the network provides?

I did some ad buys with some network and the shady sales girl did the hard sell on me to place their tracking pixel so they can track my conversions and 'optimize' my ads/

Here's the issue. Honestly you need to place their pixel usually so they can optimize out the sites that aren't converting for you. There isn't any self tracking system that's going to give the media buy company this data so you're campaign would never become profitable. There are some ad networks that are known to steal campaigns and run stuff themselves I'd find out who they are and stay away from them if you don't want this to happen. We work with a bunch of networks and have no worries they'll take our stuff so it's not like all networks are doing it.
