Well I just set up a campaign and I think the editor ruined my QS for pretty much every single keyword. I'm pissed, wasted half a day and the keywords are ruined.

Here what happened:

1. I set up the campaign in Adwords and one Adgroup
2. I used the keyword tool to add about 300 kw into the one Adgroup
3. Then I loaded it into the editor to sort etc. them.
SOMEHOW google already decided at this point, to give me a bad (2-6 on most of them) QS. No fucking idea why or how. There was NO Ads, NO URL's and Nothing except that one adgroup with the keywords in there.
4. I then neated everything out, targeted adgroups, targeted ads etc.
5. Uploaded but the bad QS persisted. The keywords aren't even going to start running because of it since I don't want to spend $100's to get a good CTR to get the QS up again.

WTF? How do they assign a QS without having a Destination URL or Display URL?

How do I get around this?

Set up everything about your campaign in the Adwords Editor so you don't have to waste tons of time clicking around within the Adwords interface.

Since you didn't have any desti url's set up, I'm thinking you should do that before you check your keywords quality score.

I always set the adgroups, ads etc. up in the editor but I wanted to use they keyword tool, and started out with that and then uploaded that into the editor and already then it showed a bad QS.

So next time I should do ads etc before the keywords? Sounds weird.

You know that you don't need to be within the Adwords tool to use the KT, right? Just open it in another tab and set your campaign up in the Adwords Editor (ads, destination url's, everything), that way when you post changes everything is set up right the first time. I notice Adwords is a bitch about those types of things when your in there constantly tweaking shit.

Yeah I know but it's just easier. Well here's my current workflow in setting up a campaign:

1. Set up a Campaign in the Editor
2. Set up one Adgroup
3. Post changes
4. Access my account, use the Keywordtool to add KW to that adgroup
5. Sort all the KW into targeted Adgroups
6. Write targeted Ads
7. Update Dest URL
8. Upload Campaign

It's been working fine so far but I'll just have to use the KW tool without being logged in and then copy it to the editor. Pain in the ass but if it works...

No no no man. The Adwords Editor is a desktop application. It's very "Excel-ish" for Adwords. Going in and setting up 1 adgroup at a time is stooopid.

Google for the Adwords Editor, it will save you TONS of headaches. I can set up a massive campaign with tons of adgroups faster than you can set up 1 adgroup.

Sorry I should have mentioned that everything from Step 5 on is in Editor (the Desktop Application).

For smaller campaigns I still like to do the Adgroups manually. I find it brings MUCH more targeted and on topic Adgroups then the Grouping tool and makes the Ads get higher CTR's too.

Hmmm.. well I'm not sure I am following you then. On your LP's are you putting the relavant keywords you are bidding on in <title> and <h1>?

Well that's the point though! At the time they lowered my QS, they didn't even know what page I was going to advertise!

You received a low quality score right off the bat even without an AD simply because it only took your account "history" into consideration in deciding the quality scores.

I've never had any problems with account history. It's about 6 months old, and this months Average CTR of all my campaigns has been 5.16% so I doubt it's the account history.

Then really there isn't any other explanation. If you've had a few campaigns in the past get slapped, or several of your keywords hit low quality scores, then you will generally start with low QS on future keywords.

You can test this easily by having another adword account, and just loading the same exact keywords in that account. See if you still get the same range of 2-6.

Some keywords can have low initial quality score. This is caused by low performance of these keywords for other advertisers.
