Employing 'send this to a friend' functionality on thin LP's?

Anyone bothered to test this? I've long thought less savvy users might appreciate a nudge in the right direction to share something 'interesting' with friends/family, especially if what's being sold appeals more to them (ie a product for men which a widowed wife comes accross but decides it might be worth sending to her daughter/son in law).

My (older) parents forward a ton of emails, so thinking perhaps this would be wise to implement.

Any suggestions for a script to cleanly allow this? (non wordpress page). Concern is abuse/exploits.

Thanks for any suggestions

be careful depending on what your advertising. You don't want certain things going viral.

add a "tweet this page", "facebook status this page", "digg this page", "send page to a freind"

"hey ma, I just paid $1 to make $5000 a month online!"

this tactic may work well with a fnews LP. it would have to be a version where the emphasis is on an interesting story, entertainment and novelty and isn't drowned out by a hard sell.

if done right people may fire it off on the basis of the entertainment it provides. most demographics would probably be very weary to suggest a product to friends but send off funny/entertainment links with a commercial agenda like crazy if it has wow factor.

this is exactly my thought. NO this isn't a <insert popular rebill offer here> offer, however the entire site is informational (not fnews, just info in a niche that hasn't been seen much).

How would you employ something like this, technically?

Yes. It works & it works well. Integrate a nice "add this to your favorite social network" somewhere that gets good visibility on your lander.. I've gotten pretty substantial results.

are you using the sharethis bar for this, or did you just grab images (icons) and use the twitter/facebook/etc 'post' ability?

I'd love to know what people are using script-wise for those 'send this to friend(s) and then there's the 'check this to join our newsletter' box already on there. Probably just custom I guess...

Actually, yes, I have used this a few times with good success:
AddThis Social Bookmarking Sharing Button Widget

OR, just write a simple code for building up an email list or a Twitter account or something - integrate into the design creatively = $$$

I'd say it depends entirely on how thin it is, and how you're making money on it.
If you're using Adsense, or some sort of CPM setup, then fore sure you want to be getting that button there, along with the tweet, facebook, myspace, etc. Whatever drives traffic that's likely to click.
If you're selling something, I'd be a little wary of how you use it. Maybe something along the lines of "Click here to tell your friends about this great offer" and have a comment field so that the friends can get a personalised message on top of your generic mail.

yeah i've been using this one. http://tellafriend.socialtwist.com
supports quite a few.

thanks, I like this alot, very clean/super easy plug and play.

My only issue with it is upon the (dhtml?) pop-up the close button is loaded from their server. I've had it fail to connect a time or two while playing with it and notice there is then no way to close this pop to get back to interact with the page.

oh crap, didn't know that. you found a better way yet?

It works if anything just to make the page look more official. The usability of it ... people actually trying to submit stuff socially or tell a friend is like 0. But it helps appearances.

why do you think that?

I see crap sent/posted all over by people in my circle, hell my mom sends mass emails with products to buy at least once a week with 50+ people on the list.

I presume morons forward that or if they find "pertinent' new info on a revolutionary product forward it on.

I'll be monitoring to see what percentage of hits come in that look to be from this, should be interesting.

1st:
"Let your friends in on this great offer and I'll send you this free video report on...." = Tell a friend script > Free vid/pdf etc

2nd:
ShareThis/Tweet This/Facebook share

Mike Filsaime does it, and we all know he is the king of scamming, so I'm sure it works.
