Is this a good deal? (pc kit)

looks good to me, I've been using a machine with only 3GB of RAM for awhile now. Just don't forgot you'll need to purchase the OS!

I use a 2GB ram pc with Windows XP and an AMD 4600+ ( not sure how is that compared to this one, I'm not that hardware geek )
I usually have 40-60 firefox tabs open, ftp, notepad++ and other editors, often IE, Opera, Safari and random stuff like winamp, toad, xampp ( apache + mysql ), openoffice etc

it's more than enough for work

Not bad, I would get more RAM if you have the extra bucks. 2 Gigs is more than enough for work, but you might want to install some games and stuff in the future as things become more resource intensive.

I'd recommend around 4 gigs if you could.

Not bad for what you get I guess. Not really digging the mini ATX mobo. Probably want to pick up an extra 2GB of ram.

Matt,

Definitely another stick of RAM in there, 4 GB Minimum, should last you a long while.

Here's what I got so far,

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 -SLBEJ-

Gigabyte X58A-UD3R ATX LGA1366 X58 DDR3 4PCI-E SATA3 USB3.0 Sound GLAN CrossFireX SLI Motherboard

G.SKILL F3-10666CL9T-6GBNQ 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1333 CL 9-9-9-24 Triple Channel Memory Kit

Gigabyte GeForce GTS 250 OC 738MHZ 1GB 2.2GHZ DDR3 PCI-E DVI-I VGA HDMI Video Card

Antec Sonata III Black ATX 16IN Mid Tower Quiet Case 3X5.25 2X3.5 4X3.5IN 500W 120MM Fan

Corsair TX750W 750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 140MM Fan

Western Digital WD1001FALS Caviar Black 1TB SATA2 7200RPM 4.2MS 32MB 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM

Might be going with the above, still researching... going to be close to it anyways..

Debating between,

1. i7 or i5 Processor
2. G. SKILL or Corsair RAM

Any opinions on the build? (I don't game at all, heavy on apps/multidesktops though)

yo, make sure to compare w/ newegg.com and ewiz.com

i just built and bought me a nice little juggernaut of a Desktop on ewiz and the price was cheaper than any comparable product at newegg or tigerdirect.

On the RAM, I agree with this:

When one wants premium quality memory, there are only a few names that come to mind
first; Mushkin, Crucial and Corsair.

Blackline - Mushkin Enhanced

I've used Asus and MSI MB's for over 25 years now. (Only one board failure in that time and it an MSI that was 6 years old.) I'm a FIRM believer in having a good power supply and UPS that regulates line current to keep my MB's healthy. I've never used a Gigabyte MB before.

I'd also go ahead take the I7 over the I5 if you can spare the extra cash. You know how technology is, the top of the line now is almost minimum in 18 months. So I would set the system up as close to the top of the line at the present as I possibly could.

I also like that Antec midtower.

Don't know why, but "I" don't like anything under 750W for a power supply and I get the SINGLE rail 12v. (The dual rail is not as stable as they were tauting them.)

Don't know if you use a UPS on your systems? But I would recommend at a minimum an APC Smart-UPS 1500 Anything less than the "Smart UPS" line by APC and the batteries are NOT replaceable anymore.

My systems usually last me for about 4 years in some capacity. Then I just turn the old ones into seed boxes for my guilty pleasure of P2P.

I need another fresh machine and saw this...

Will be used for work only, running minor automated tasks, and must remain quick when taxed moderately.

Looks a little shy on ram eh...

Your opinion?

Biostar MCP6PB PowerUp Barebone Kit - Biostar MCP6PB M2+ Mobo, AMD Phenom X4 9650 CPU, Centon 2GB DDR2 RAM, Hitachi Deskstar 1TB Internal HD, PowerUp Black ATX Mid-Tower Case w/450W PSU at TigerDirect.com

If this thing had at least 4GB of ram I'd say jump on it for the price. At that price, if it lasted for a year it would have been worth the cost.

BUT!! 2GB of ram is going to fill up quick and slow the system down if you are doing any decent amount of multi-tasking. That system/MB won't allow you to put more than the 2 GB it is coming with in it. (Not upgradeable.)

I think it'd be a decent setup , however more ram = better.

My stup:

Intel i7 920 Overclocked to right about 4ghz
ASUS P6T Mobo
6gb of Corsair Dominator 1600 ram.
EVGA gtx 275
Patriot Torqx 64gb SSD Drive (215r/150w)
Antec p193 case w/ 850w PS
Only spent around $1550 when I built the thing.

Overall it works pretty darn good.

Thanks for suggestions everyone... ended up not buying.

Have 4g now, and 2 g on the lappy.... threw a couple programs on there to run simultaneously and it bogs so no go.

Looks like what I need is 6g ddr3, though I'm not sure there's a huge difference between ddr2 & 3 other than the speed of the sticks you pick out regardless.

If it were me I think I'd grab this one instead, even though it is a refurb. And it's C2D, not an AMD.

Specifications:

Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q8200 2.33GHz
6GB DDR2 memory
750GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 rpm)
NVIDIA GeForce G100 512MB (graphics written wrong in tigerdirect specs)
Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64-bit

A poor man's tool
Totally need quad core xeons for ultimate browser tabbing!

/sarcasm

Seriously though, computers have become so powerful today, Von Neumann would roll over in his grave if he knew what they're used for! Do people really need dual/quad-gigahertz cpu's to browse Facebook...?

For the majority of Affiliate work, you honestly don't need more than a stock HP office desktop. There's a reason these systems are the most widely placed corp solution... they possess exactly the abilities to get work done.

Gaming-wise... I'm sorry but if an AM takes his career seriously he'll play with Porsches, not Light Elfs.

Entertainment... top Intel integrated chipsets playback 1080p just fine...

Audiophile? Plug in an Audigy2 and eat your heart out.

CAD/Post-Proc Designer? You've got legitimate reasons to blow up on processing power.

Writer? Mate, my 1985 80386 does that!

That's a darn good setup that would take care of 90% of people's needs.

Went with the i7/corsair in the end, this should last a long while.. Did a bunch of research to make a quiet PC too, my current one sounds like a vacuum cleaner...

Figure I'd put this here for the clueless. i7 is kick ass, don't get me wrong, I have it in all of the servers I build recently, but would I put it in a desktop? Fuck no. Why? The i7 and i5 are basically the same chip, except the i5 has hyperthreading turned off. This means that given your proc hasn't got a reason to swap fast between more than four processes (it doesn't, trust me) then you paid more for something you don't need. If it's a server on the other hand i7 makes perfect sense since you'd likely want to be able to swap between 16 processes ridiculously fast. Save your cash, go for i5.

Nice box Zimok.

That system should give you at least 3 years of FAST no bog service.

@Insomniac, I get what you are saying. I read the specs and had decided that for the price of a high end Q series vs. the I series that most people could and would be better suited with the Q series or I5. But "I" would rather build an overkill I7 system so that I have the extra processing power in case I were to ever need it.
