Diaspora - our future?

Well I hope with their trusted level of advisors at least one of them has some marketing sense. Diaspora? Really, did you have to go full nerd on us? What a horrible name.

99% of Facebook users don't give a shit about privacy on Facebook.

This^

There's probably a few thousand people really upset about the privacy stuff.

Meanwhile, there are 400 fucking million users that don't know their dick from a power cord who will keep merrily trucking away with their frat party reach around pictures with red cup in hand available for everyone to see.

Just to play devil's advocate, but wouldn't something like this appeal to a similar crowd like the reddit community?

If they build something that "only" has 100,000 active users, I think they'd be able to turn a profit.

That being said, there are still a lot of open questions and we have to wait for the execution.

not gonna happen.

the whole point of facebook is that everyone you know is on it. Even in the early days, when they were exclusive to a few colleges, you still had everyone in your classes on it to connect with.

what I think will happen, is that they'll finish, launch, and get like 100,000 signups if they are lucky...then people will figure out that there is noone they know on it, so they'll quit.

Yeah I watched the video the guys making it made. It's retarded and they have no fucking clue what they're talking about. They're also a bunch of rejects who couldn't otherwise get jobs so I give you 1 guess what happens to this pile of shit. No one wants to host their own fucking website it's stupid.

This is what those not in the VC world call

"A retarded bullshit idea that a bunch of suckers will lose a bunch of money on"

Let's all be real here:

The only reason we log into facebook is to see our friends and friends of friends in fucking bikinis, or drunk with their tits out. You know, the pictures they were tagged in but didn't upload and that they don't know are online yet. I think my Facebook account literally has dust on it, but I'm constantly checking my old friends from high school and their little sister's titties out.

So a distributed, private social network that appeals to tech savvy users is the last fucking thing I want. I want unadulterated, shouldn't-be-public-facing titty pics, and that is it.

Diaspora makes me think of dentata, dunno why.

The whole idea of Facebook is to group the entire world under one platform. Open-sourced social networks aren't new and rarely work out in niches because they become unused. Also, Facebook doesn't even use a relational database anymore because it just can't keep up with the load. They use something similar to what Teradata pushes to large banking networks or sites like Travelocity.

I honestly don't see this taking off.

Thats how I feel. Techcrunch and these other big time sites just need something to write about everyday in regards to facebook. A few thousand people get pissed about privacy settings and its a front page story. Theres what 400 million users? I dont think its as big a deal as some people make it out to be.

All this noise reminds me of when Apps for Facebook came out, and there were tech bloggers writing bullshit like "will facebook office apps kill Google Docs???? Oh noes!"

Facebook is ultimately a novelty with a massive market share that feeds the lust of so many pathetic people yearning for vicarious thrills.

Wasn't that the only reason why facebook exists?

Altho if alternative platform had merit, I'd say we all support it in our own little ways. I'm sure some of us have acquired pretty big traffic sources to throw a few banners around to promote it. Cause think about it, new platform with media hype actually taking off would mean a new platform for us to wreck.

But in the end, diasphora won't work. Just like the above people posted, 99% of facebook users are too dumb to give a shit about privacy.
