anyone live in a small town?

so heres my deal, i grew up in a small town population 14k, i went to high school and graduated with 107 ppl. i had fun in my high school days, but then moved on to bigger and better things like college, and met tons of new people. my school also had 40k ppl there so it was a huge adjustment.

now i graduated, and i'm back at home. just to give you an example, i went out to the bar last nite, a pretty popular bar for around here, i would say i knew 80% of the people that were there. all ppl from high school that do the same thing every weekend, and hang out with the same people that they knew since they were in kindergarten.

and i've just come to the conclusion that its retarded that these ppl don't escape there comfort zone ever, and also that i feel like i'm going backwards in life by hanging out with them.

another thing i've noticed about where i live is that its filled with retards. there are exceptions, but its filled with people like the blue collar comedy tour comedians, just without the southern accent. the problem is that they don't know their idiots either.

i never noticed all this stuff until i got out of the bubble and went to college and experienced a hell of a lot of new things, now coming back i just see how dumb it is around here.

i just needed to get that out there, and does anyone else live or ever lived in a small town?

Same thing here. I live in a large city now, but my hometown has about 15k people.

Now the hot spot there is Buffalo Wild Wings. Every time I go home to visit, if I go there, I always see at least 10 people I know.

Where I'm from the cool thing to do is field parties, float trips, going mudding, and going to the races. And a few shit hole nasty ass night clubs.

Glad I got out of there...

I feel you - I grew up in a town of 2000 people in far northern MN - 9 miles from Canada.

Since then I've been there, done that - been overseas, around the US, etc.

I now live in a smallish city - 50K - but I regularly travel to larger metro areas.

When I'm home I have 5 acres in the country with very little noise.

that sounds really similar..

the cool stuff in my area is to drive a huge truck, wear chippewa boots, hang out with ppl you've known ur whole life, drink with no ambition of getting laid, and gambling your money at the casinos.

and the most important is who you know ... "o your last name is smith? do you know jane smith?" ... "no, now stfu"

it literally amazes me when i hear ppl talk about themselves sometimes b/c its usually about how much they've spent down at the casino .. and i'm just thinking how retardedly they spend their money

EDIT: the thing i've always noticed though is that no one is ambitious that lives here .. no one i know or would care to know anyway ... and to me thats killer. I have 2 single friends, and they still won't hit on chicks and don't want to ... its fucking stupid
 
Dude honestly you are right and I know what you are speaking of. Grew up in a small town (2k pop lol) now living in a big city... so much better...

Will never return to a small city every again. Just sucks ass.
 
I grew up in similar circumstances ~25K people. There are definitely some "townies" still around when I go back there. But there's no need to be a snob or look down on them.

True... they're not willing to leave their comfort zone... but you know what? They're probably happy doing all the shit you just described. Might I even be bold enough to suggest that they're happier than you?

So if I get this thread straight, what we have here is the village nerd going off to college to get educated, returning home, and finding out he's still a beta male and that his fancy degree won't get him laid with the chicks he lusted after in high school. So, now he wants to go to the big city hoping it'll be different.

Have fun. The second I'm done in Vancouver I'm heading back to a small town to be a Doctor, drive my boat and truck, and live on a farm. Shit maybe I'll coach the high school football team to boot.

Yup, I'm in Maine and my town probably has about 15k and I know practically everyone from my high school and 90% of them are still living here.

It tough... one part of me wants to move to California, Florida, Vegas or some other place so I focus hardcore on my business and live my dreams. Other part of me wants to just live in my hometown because of my girlfriend and it's awesome knowing everyone and I have a lot of people I've been friends with for 15 + years.

I know what your saying though about the feeling of going backwards in life. When I hang out with my buddies, literally none of them have a job paying more then minimum wage and we pretty much just drink and smoke and "chill". It sucks because I always feel guilty because I feel like I'm wasting my time (which I am) and that I should be working on my business.

For business moving away and focusing all your time on it is obviously the smarter thing to do. But is that really going to make you happy?

Sure you will probably make more money, but when you're on your death bed are you going to regret missing out on the fun memories your friends shared?

So for those of you who where in a similar situation and moved out to the big city or whatever... are you glad you did? Any regrets? Do you miss your family and old friends a lot? Just wondering because I'd like to move, but a part of me doesn't think it's the right thing to do, in terms of happiness.

Most people in small towns work their ass off, have good values and enjoy life. If you think living in a large city automatically equals happiness, you're mistaken.

You left, did you're thing, went back and still appear to be unhappy. Everyone thinks the grass is always greener.

There are dumb-fucks everywhere. The largest populations of dipshits per capita are in the major cities.

What makes you happy in your 20's probably won't be the same as your 30's, 40's, etc.

If you hate small towns, move your ass to a big city.
 
i dunno i have best of both worlds right now, i'll have a job where i travel then i come back here ... i just feel like i miss out living here doing the same stuff i've already experienced in life.
