What do you guys think is more important: backlinks or content? I'm new to IM and I just want to know what I should focus at! I would like to know, if you had an amount of money, in which of the two options would you invest more? Thanks in advance, by the way, great forum!

Ok, looks like your icon has changed. To me, I think it depends on how much competition the keyword has to be honest. I have ranked sites with little content to the front of Google with a lot of backlinks. If you have good quality content though your backlinks should be easier to obtain through natural channels.

It really depends on your goal. It depends if your site is meant to last long-term and be a real business or make a quick buck and go away. For short-term throw-away, quick money sites, I'd say backlinks are more important, but for long-term I'd say they are equally important 50/50. For long-term you DEFINITELY NEED BOTH.

Content means NOTHING.

Well, on a second thought, it might make up for 10% of the ranking factors.

That is a broad amd sweeping statement that is FALSE in MANY, MANY cases...

You mean to tell me that for long-term WH sites, content means nothing?

I have to disagree with most of the posters here. If you are building a long term project (such as an online store, information site, etc.) - content is the most important factor. Second write some good PRs, then building some high relevant backlinks etc., followed by feeder sites that you bombard with links.

Without a good and converting sales letter, product description, or review no one will buy from you, return to your site, or recommend it to their friends. Furthermore, if your site is providing value to the customer/visitors, links will follow without YOU having to build them ....

Of course this approach will not make you millions tomorrow, but your site will be there and bring you money over the next few years ....

Content is worthless without Backlinks...

Backlinks are worthless without Content...

This is not a VERSUS

You might as well ask what is more important an engine or the gas to run it?

.

Unfortunately its backlinks, and the time it takes to get them indexed means you need to start building them yesterday!

Backlinks are the lifeblood of your SEO, but to get quality ones, you need to focus on good content. If you publish great content, you will get the backlinks you need. Yes, it will take time, but that's the best way to do it. Links that you buy/trade for are not nearly as valuable as the ones generated by good 'ol fashioned quality content. To the search engines, quality backlinks are like votes...the more you have, the more popular you are considered, and the higher your ranking will be. If you have content that others genuinely find informative and interesting (and WANT to link to), you're more likely to get the 'votes'.

Exactly.

How do you think shitty scrapper sites like bizrate rank?

I gave content a 10% factor though because without it you can't monetize the traffic, it also helps with relevancy etc.

Links make up for 90% of the reasons why a site ranks.

Just ask dchuk.

Content. Google has changed their algorithms. It's a combination or content, inbound links and outbound to authoritative sources.

YOU DO NOT NEED LINKS TO RANK FOR EVERY TERM! JUST REAL COMPETITIVE SEARCH TERMS.....

OK, thanks! This subject is a little controversial, I think that for now I will focus on both in equal way to see how it goes. The keyword is very competitive and there are, in my opinion, better sites with better content that are ranked lower than the #1. Just a last question, do you think that xrumer or linkwheels could damage my rank? Is google sandbox a myth?

Dumb question. This isn't an A > B discussion.

Backlinks are trash unless they link back to good content. Good content is qualified by various factors, depending on your site's goal, including its ability to make a sale, relevance, usefulness, etc. But once you have good content, backlinks are what's going to boost you in the SERPS.

If you try to make a A>B case out of backlinks vs content, you're doing it wrong.

If I had to "vote" for one, it'd be content. Too many newbs through up shit and buy 2,000 directory submissions. You're going to make dick until your content does what you need it to whether it's convert sales, build readership, or incur revisits. That always comes first and it's pretty hard to argue otherwise.

There's a reason why content is king. But in this new age of xrumer happiness, backlinks can get you better results. But if you have little to no content and you just blast backlinks to the site, you'll be wasting tons of time/money. The rule is, make great content first. Then worry about backlinking. But the best backlinks are backlinks that are made naturally by people that like your content. Unfortunately not everyone can rank well just through that and everyone needs a little boost. That's when you turn to xrumer.

You are very true, if you had some good or great content it is easy to rank with links, though it is possible to rank with no content it is best to have good content.
