Put up a affiliate website in the niche of guitar products (it's a pretty big niche, I know) about a month ago, and ran it through bookmarking demon at the start (with very poor results).

According to yahoo site explorer (I'm not sure how reliable this is) I have 16 backlinks to that site, so I've refunded BMD. I'm not sure where to take it now, I've had one sale so far, I was thinking of buying Mass Article Control, and getting some articles that way, providing more traffic & backlinks, but maybe the more experianced SEO guys on here have a better insight?

fraser - most importantly have you narrowed down your affiliate efforts within a sub niche? acoustic guitar? classical guitar? guitar lessons?

there are also plenty of folks on here that have great feedback on their backlinking services and article writing.

be sure to check out those sections of the forum.

you can also use the search function on the forums to research SEO and learn what things others have done to garner great results.

For fucks sake.

Firstly it might help to let us know exactly which keyword you are trying to rank for.
 
Get more anchor text backlinks to the pages that make you money. Use yahoo site explorer to examine the backlinks of your competitors. Get links where they are getting links for ideas.

That term is extremely competitive, the top ranking site has over 100K incoming in links. Good luck trying to compete with that in the near future. I would consider going for a much less competitive term as its pretty obvious you are a noob.

Even the pros would take a year+ to outrank that site or even get anywhere near it. You might get top 10 within 6 months at a push with some VERY relevant links and a shit load of very relevant content on an ages guitar related domain if you are lucky. I think you'll nee a few more than 16 links.
 
If you only have 16 links after a month, you need to change your whole approach up. Do you not have any money to invest in SEO services? If not, better learn a lot more about how to get relevant backlinks.
