For those of you who don't know who they are, 30 Seconds To Mars is an alt-rock band consisting of Jared Leto, his brother, and his friend. Jared Leto is an actor known for his performances as Angel Face in Fight Club, Paul Allen in American Psycho, Harry Goldfarb in Requiem for a Dream, and Vitaly Orlov in Lord of War, amongst other movies.

I've been following the band from a musical and a marketing perspective for several years, and from what I have gathered, there are few bands who do it better.

You might remember their song "The Kill", or the video, which takes place in the Overlook Hotel from The Shining. This put them on the map. They had following videos which took place in a massive Chinese temple, on a glacier in Antarctica, and through the streets of Los Angeles.

While still not big-name, they manage to pull in a good profit marketing themselves and doing what they love. They put together the use of the quintessential street team in The Echelon, and award them handsomely with positions in their music videos, as well as their entrance into the VMA's.

In addition to drumming up publicity through their expensive and elaborate videos, they stirred controversy with their most recent video, "Hurricane", which was banned in the United States as a result of explicit content. They speculated that in the month since the video ban, the video has been streamed online twice as many times as they anticipated.

What say you about their marketing ideals? Here are the videos for reference:

Rape me kindly, Wicked brethren. Rape me kindly.

Because of my insomnia I literally just sat here and watched all of these videos, and I must say. Pretty awesome!

Just gave me a new band to add to my collection of good music :)
Thanks!

And the first video is fucking brilliant.

Glad to hear from a populace that they are "big-name" now. I've been following them religiously since their self titled came out nine years ago.

And glad you like the videos.

30 seconds to mars

my son, 16 years old, asked me to listen to this band, and watch a few videos.
I must say that my music preferences lay elsewhere, but I must admit that this group is solid shit.

Agh, rock music.

First off, "Hurricane", is actually a creation of beats by Kanye West, Jared, and Aphex Twin. It was kind of a trial between Jared and Kanye, who was already working with Aphex twin for his latest album.

I've grown up in the rock scene. From Gutter Punk, to Emo, to Scene, I've seen it all.

Even though Jared doesn't like to associate his actor status with his musical, I highly doubt "30 Seconds to Mars" would have rose to such prominence without it.

They are a good rock band.

But my main problem with them, and many others, is that they are all basically actors.
What I mean by that is yes, they all have "musical" talents, but for the majority of music, specifically rock music, there is a ghost writer.

And I feel as if they are more or less acting like rock artists, than being them.

To back up my ghostwriting opinion, search how many songs Bob Dylan wrote for the Rolling Stones.

Thoughts?
