lets say your site blows away all other sites in a specific topic when it comes to providing relevant and the most information on the specific topic, but the SE's find out that you were buying links to raise your SERP rankings. Your site is currently ranked in the top 3. What do the SE's do? Ban your site and remove the best site out there for that specific topic, or let you have the high ranking even though you bought links?

Remove the power those paid links gave you and see if this 'best-in-class-for-niche' site can make it to the top again...

You're saying your site "blows away all other sites" when it comes to providing real useful info on your topic. If so, you'd be an AUTHORITY site. Take out the paid links and focus more on spreading word about your site (relationship building with related sites).
