Guys and gals, ya know how girlfriends and boyfriends(for those of you who swing that way) always seem to try to act interested in what your into? What the hell are you supposed to do when they want to know all about seo and website marketing? It always ends the same way....umm yeah Eli i have no idea what your talking about, but by the time they tell me that i'm all excited and talking jibberish at a mile a minute with no intentions of stopping. You can't just get me started on a nerd topic that heats me up and expect me to keep it short. Thats just cruel!
Earlier today i was trying to explain captchas and ocr algorythms to a friend of mine. I thought the poor girl was going to faint. If it was possible for a conversation to kill someone i would of done it right there. haha
We need some website that we can send them to.

It'll say something like
So Sally Sue, you have a boyfriend that is into seo. Here is what seo is and why you shouldn't care and quit asking questions. Yes he is still willing to have sex with you even though you don't know what SERP stands for. By the way if he suddenly jumps out of bed in the middle of the night and spends the next couple hours on the computer don't worry he's just got an idea, he can and will eventually go back to bed...etc

anyways back to bed for me....haha have a good night.

Yes, and the site would have to show videos stylized like the 50s, b/w with the perky characters demonstrating things haha!

Same here :p I've been going out with my girlfriend for awhile and I think she has this stuff down pretty well now. That or she has learned just not to ask :)
 
I just explain stuff by using metaphors involving cars, paper, etc.

Every day stuff.

They usually don't understand the metaphore, even, which in itself is pretty bizarre because imo it's usually pretty easy to understand.
 
A metaphor that has worked well for me is publishing.

Yeah, you can't easily explain arbitrage with it, but you can use it to explain normal internet ads related income.

Arbitrage I explain using arbitrage (the usual kind - stock markets).

Although most people are still a bit puzzled as to the HOW, it normally leads to understanding of the what you are doing.
