If I have the first 10 posts displayed on the homepage, and in their category pages, will this be recognized by goog as duplicate content? Will this have negative effects in terms of SEO?

Sorry, cedricloi, but your statement is simply wrong.

Yes, it can have negative effects, and I'd suggest using a SEO plugin that allows setting categories, tags, etc. to noindex. One duplicate page won't matter much, but especially when using tags and categories excessively, you'll get loads of it.

duplicate content always matter .but as u said it appears to be in a wordpress kind of theme. So u no need to worry.A no. of sites are in wordpress with same pattern and r still ranking well.

No.. That won't be marked as duplicate content. If you are published content snippet on your home page followed by a link to the actual content page, Google will count is as a part of your main content.

thx for the replies

It isnt just a snippet though, homepage dispays three full 1000 word posts, and these full posts are also displayed in categories.

Does it not make sense to have as much content on every page as possible, while trying to minimize duplicate content? Listing excerpts of articles seems like a waste of resources?

The combined posts basically make the page a new document. Aside from that SE's will index duplicate content under the right conditions.
