Can anyone help please?

I've got a main site up and spidered into google etc, if i buy a new domain name and include it as an add on domain with my host will this affect things or is it best to seperately host it?

When you refer to them as "add-on" domains this tells me you're using cpanel/whm, the downside to an "add-on" domain is that simply it shares the same IP as the account it was created under, which doesn't work very well for SEO purposes or cross linking, as google will then associate the two as possibly being from the same owner. If you're using whm with your host, you'll want to create a new account so that you can easily separate the domain from the other, preferably with an IP of a different c-block. (ie: IP AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD)

If the two websites are completely unrelated and don't link to each other it wouldn't matter, but if you're trying to cross link them for back link purposes, then host separately or least get it onto a different c-block IP.

Yes, well said by kblessinggr.
Might I add, it's a bit more difficult to transfer sites if they are setup as an add on domain, same with backups... Backups and transfers are less of a pain if they are setup in cpanel as their own accounts properly, rather than as an add-on domain. It also makes security issues if you plan to have anyone working on your sites for you, as they will need to have access to all your domains in order to work on one of them in some cases.

Add-on domains are OK (for e.g. mini-sites), if you have a good host and don't do anything black-hat, i.e. interlinking sites to gain an advantage.

Back-ups, transfers and security are not a problem if you have a good, reliable host.

To answer your question, lucky, no. These dudz are overcomplicating it. Though what they say is correct.

Correct on both parts.

Unless you are planning to do a lot of interlinking between your sites, or SEO, it is of no real concern.

For most people, it is a non-issue.

Add on domain will not make any difference! In fact all of my domains are add-on domains & They are fine!!

Hi,
I have good finance ,real states and insurance sites ,If you have same them sites with less than 30 outgoing links contact me at roseanderson26[a]gmail[dot]com

*cough* robots.txt disallow </add-on_domain_foldername/> *cough*

Unless you're going for private IP's it doesn't matter at all how much add-ons you're going to plug. If anything else you're going to be sharing one IP with +/- 20 random individuals anyways (which are able to screw 'your' IP up).

Lastly, even if you'd make 500+ add-on sites with 100% unique / quality content, Big G has no ground to devalue any of your sites whatsoever. Might take a few weeks longer to get them ranked compared to a variety of C-class, but there's nothing bad about it.

I've been curious about this as well, from a larger prospective - I'm going to be posting some details on a linked site wheel style I'm looking to do for a local seo client that's going to have 10-20 "areas" domain sites, linking to a "big city" domain site, which will link to the corporate umbrella site. Then there's about 6 "big city" sites. All-in-all this will be a link-wheel style web group of around 80 sites.

I keep hearing different answers on the "separate IP" vs. "separate C-block" vs. "shared IP".

I have a VPS, so my question (and hopefully similar, instead of hijacking this) is - is it worth the headache, and hassle, of separating this into 5-domain sites and putting them on a bunch of different hosts, or could I purchase multiple IPs from my VPS (probably all in the same C-block though) and mix it up a bit, or could I just host them all on the same IP and rely on the content and external backlink-building?

This is the shit that I'm not that good with. Does Google actually compare the C-block to make sure the IP address is totally separate from the other properties before assigning it as an external backlink?

You do not need to put them on a bunch of different hosts, unless you really want to go for separate GEO and C. Typically just putting them on separate C is enough.

We have access to over 100 different C blocks, and three different data centers. So if you are looking to SEO on a larger scale long term. It's worth the investment to get more IP's and then mix up your different sites and IP's via the control panel.

There is more to it, but I do not want to hijack the thread. Just wanted to hit on that point for those looking to do more long tail, long term, SEO tactics.
