Adsense Playing Me?

Here's the situation: I did research for a "mini" niche site on a keyword that gets $50+ CPC and there are over a dozen advertisers and Spyfu confirmed that the CPC was just between $40-$50.

My results once I hit the front page for my keyword? I'm getting about a quarter a click. Does anyone know why or how this would occur and how to avoid it? I know for a fact people are paying a lot for this keyword but I'm not getting good paying clicks--any ideas?
 


Google pays out 67% of what an advertiser pays them. You my friend sound like you've been "smart priced". From what I understand G discounts the advertiser and effectively pays you less because they for some reason do not trust/like your traffic at the moment.

Solution? Possibly time.
 
They probably know people can figure out high CPC keywords and make some shit page to get the off click here and there, having a system to stop it. So yeah, you got played son.
 
Could it be that these advertisers are are paying a much lower CPC for content network traffic?

Also are the ads you're seeing on Adsense the same sites that are on the frontpage of Google for the your keywords?

I thought this too--but that's a huge fucking discpreancy, isn't it? I mean $50+ for search and $1-$3 for content? I don't know...

The thing is I read that smart pricing (as mentioned by Spades) changes depending on where the traffic comes from. i.e. if someone comes to my site through searching for the keyword--and then clicks an ad--I get more money than if someone came from some shitty YouTube video or type in traffic.
 
Want to paste my ads in for a day? I can then tell you if my clicks are getting $40 - $50 :) As far as I know, my account is not smart-priced. Actually, I'm not sure whether smart-pricing affects a domain, or an entire account...hmm...

lol. I just did some reading and it seems the CTR of the ad might have something to do with it. i.e. you get penalized for having a low CTR and get only 10% of the normal CPC--so I'm going to test out some different colors and see if I can get the CTR up see if it helps at all.

Honestly high CTR's have had more of a negative effect in my experience. I think BluAffiliate has a point, it might be an initial "road block" to deter the short term pubs trying to game high cpc terms.

Got it. Alright. Honestly I think the content on the site is good though, so I'm just going to keep pushing it and wait to see what happens over time. Thanks for the input guys.
 
How many pages do you have adsense on? Try reducing adsense to the main visited pages. Less clicks but higher cpcs and focus on driving traffic to those pages
 
I think smart pricing happens in real time on a per click basis. If someone clicks then hits the back button immediately, you can be sure that you will get less money than if the visitor stayed on the site and bought something, or browsed for a few minutes.

I have some sites that consistently get just 10-20 clicks per day but in niches that are supposedly high-paying. One site ranges anywhere from 7 cents per click to $11 per click, that big of a difference just from one day to the next.
 
Noone is going to pump $50/click into the content farm, I mean network. You should be getting more than a quarter though. Stick with it and it should go up in time. How old is the site/adsense account?

Really good point.

With the site that gets 7 cents to $11 per click, what's the avg CPC that Google/Spyfu tells you? Just curious how it matches up to what you're actually getting.
 
Are you seeing the ads that pay the $50? It could be showing ads that only pay the 15 cents or whatever, due to the interest based ads.

You can figure out what is showing and block the low paying ones using the competitive ad filter.

Very true.

So right now I'm either:

a.) Being smart priced.

b.) For whatever reason only displaying low cost ads.

I'll wait a bit longer and if it doesn't turn out for the better I'll consider filtering. Thanks for the input man.
 
Take piece of shit adsense off there and advertise whatever the advertisers are willing to pay $50/click for.

or contact the advertisers with an offer...
 
Lemme give you some tips although i am not with Adsense anymore. Been one of their TOP pubs for years and had a rep.

1) Smart pricing is usually account wide.
2) Secondly, the click and action data is used to determine your CPC, especially when the advertiser is using a conversion cookie. They exactly know if that offer converted for the advertiser or not, If it did, more money to you or just a few cents.

3) if your site continues to be pathetic and doesnt convert at all, over time you will get smartpriced. This can be corrected with a high converting website.

4) Often advertisers complain to their reps about a site, this can get you in the flush pretty quickly.

5) PRO TIP: Even if you feel your site is well targetted to the niche, it might not be getting the relevant ads as your keywords are not properly understood by the adbot. Find the high paying keywords and create some posts around the keywords. Make atleast 3-4 post then see the magic

6) use google ad preview tool to see if any advertisers targetting your ads. Remove image ads, split test with or without image to see which ones do well. For low traffic sites, text ads always perform better coz images ads are mostly on CPM basis.
