Disclaimer: I’m not looking for any handouts, but I could definitely use some tips from people who actually know what the fuck they’re talking about.

To be more specific, let me give you a quick rundown of where I’m at. I quit my job as a reporter last Nov. to work online fulltime. By writing for different content mills and private clients, I have been able to provide for myself thus far. However, that income is nowhere near where I’d like it to be. The problem is that writing for other people’s businesses isn’t going to get me where I need to be and I feel like the longer I stay in this comfort zone, the more stagnant I will become.

So, back in January, I decided that building my own websites would be the way to go. But, after sifting through a seemingly endless sea of meaningless ebooks, scam-ridden forums and rotten marketing websites, I became slightly overwhelmed. Luckily, I didn’t waste any money on that garbage, but I did contract that debilitating ailment known as “paralysis by analysis.” Finally, in April, after purchasing a slew of domains and gathering keywords, I launched 15 sites designed to make money primarily through Adsense. While I intend to grow the better performing sites over the next several years, it is now becoming painfully obvious Adsense alone is not going to cut it and even if it did, putting my entire income in the hands of Google would be incredibly fucking stupid. Naturally, I'm beginning to think that affiliate marketing is the best way to grow/diversify my business.

Now, the only affiliate stuff I'm involved in right now is through Amazon. Obviously, I want to step up and get involved with networks and offers. I'm just feeling unsure of the next step to take. How did you get started? Should I stick with just promoting offers/products through my websites or do you think CPA/PPV is worth pursuing? If so, can you recommend any tutorials that may help get the ball rolling? Basically, I’m just looking for some tips on how to get started. I’m a hard worker and I realize I will have to spend money to make money, but I’m also trying to avoid any major/obvious mistakes.

Finally, what networks would you guys recommend for someone just starting out? What would you say is the easiest traffic method to learn (aside from SEO)? Also, should I have a specific type of website to show the aff manager when speaking with them? Generally, what’s a good ballpark investment for my initial campaign(s)?

I appreciate you taking the time to read this. Sorry the post was so long, but I wanted to pose specific questions relating to my situation rather than idiotic ones (e.g., “how can I make $ on the interwebz”). Thank-you.

Tl;dr Former reporter/copywriter looking to get started in aff marketing. Q’s: How did you get started? Looking back, what would you have done differently? Which traffic method(s) would you recommend? Recommended networks? Thanks.
