Occasionally, I receive an offer from a merchant to join their affiliate program. Recently Vistaprint sent me an invitation, but I know they affiliated with several networks.

Do affiliates receive a better fee dealing direct, or through the networks?

I go with networks for most things 99% of the time because I don't want to have to deal with merchants or advertisers directly due to many of them not understanding the space, plus I don't like dealing with more people than I have to. Also Kaveman is right. You can get better payouts for the same advertiser through a network than through a direct connection. Except with financial leads, that's the exception.

If you choose to work with a merchant outside of a network like CJ, make sure they have been in business a long time.

I have been burned before by smaller mom-and-pop sites converting $1000 a month in commission ($10K sales), and they dropped their affiliate program without notice.

There are reputable programs out there that aren't on networks and can pay more since it's very expense to advertise on CJ and Linkshare ($2000+ a month)

As always, try to pick programs that fit your surfer interest.

What are you selling?

learning how to convert is the trick. starting with smaller daily amounts and tweaking daily might learn lessons for less cash. Yes, if it does make you feel better, it is very common. It's an art that needs to be learned and always modified by staying in touch with great resources like this site.

If you get paid about 5% or less more from using the merchant then I would choose the network instead. This is because all your payments get consolidated into one larger check, plus the network will take care of the payments and any issues that occur.

If you go with a direct merchant then I agree with some of the above, make sure the are reputable. If it is a pay per sale program then it is not so bad with merchants, but some of the pay per lead/action programs can burn you especially pay per click type programs.

The reasons for this that there is likely to be more dodgy pay per lead and click programs rather than pay per sale, especially from the newer merchant programs is because the affiliate program owner doesn't really work things out good enough and they find that they have to payout much more than what they have earn't from the efforts of pay per click and pay per lead and then rather not pay their affiliates than pay them. Atleast with Pay Per Sale, they will definately make money from their product every time you sell it for them.

i'd be worried about dealing w/ a small company if you are going aff direct to merchant... i was burned that way w/ some dropshipping deals I thought would be great, but the companies either went out of business, didn't have a good payment system, or just were shady in general...

I must admit that people do get burned, but the amount that they get burned from pay per sale programs are minimal compared to how many people actually get burned through the GPT industry (get paid to read emails, get paid to surf, etc.).
