I was in Chicago last week gassing up the rental car and I noticed a flyer that was conspicuously attached to the gas pump. It was an ad for blackbelt classes that emphasized weight loss as the angle.
Seeing this got me thinking about other alternate 'bum marketing' methods of promotion. How many of you have employed or still employ methods like this for promotion of affiliate offers? What percentage of your overall efforts are devoted to such methods?

(I don't feel bad about pulling one, whoever did it, plastered them all over the gas pump)

Saw a sign hanging over a freeway overpass right outside of downtown LA stating "free ipod @ www.url.com!"

Not sure how much it brought him, but it most certainly got a lot of exposure while it lasted.

I've seen some small postcards for niche dating sites in gas station restrooms ... thought it was pretty sleezy, but at the same time creative. They just sat their cards on the back of the pisser so you can't help but check them out.

I see road signs dug into the grass here in san antonio for - Looking for date? sasingles.com or something similar.

I saw a road sign on the Hume on my way to Canberra over the weekend.
At first glance, just looked like one of the ones they use when they're announcing construction works sometime soon...
Nope, it was advertising a dating service for people that lived in regional areas... WTF? Do they even have something better than dialup in places like WaggaWagga?

I thought it was clever as people ALWAYS read the signs that look like construction works announcements.

I had business cards printed up with my url and as much info as I could fit put on them. I would keep them with me and place them in restrooms whenever I was out.

I'm not sure if I ever really got any traffic from it though, I didn't do it for long.

Something I've considered in the past was getting some stickers made up and sticking them everywhere people would see them, gas pumps, restrooms, phones, drive throughs, etc.

Stickers on beer pumps works quite well. As do stickers in the Gents.

If you're selling the right product, of course.....

Oh shit! I kid you not about this one, guys.
Went out to grab a bite to eat about 2 hours ago, thought I'd swing through a mall's foodcourt because I couldn't decide what I wanted to eat.
Went to wash my hands first...

There was a little TV screen in the goddamn hand dryer!!
An ad for Smith's crisps came on as I was trying to dry my hand.
Ironically, I couldn't hear a damn thing over the noise of the fan in the dryer (although the song and the Gobbledock are stuck in my head now)

Mimic a well known design for it's 'look and feel'. That could be clever.... or maybe not depending on if it's something most people are ad-blind to. Interesting.

Well, conversely there's the worrying precedent that if you imitate the "successful" design of government or other authoritarian announcement systems, people will stop paying attention to the legitimate announcements.
It could be seriously dangerous if people stopped paying attention to roadworks announcements because people were using the same style of signage to promote things.

The domain registry of canada|america spammers have made a killing doing this....
