Ingress

Merge this with World of Warcraft, and we are getting closer to a full virtual reality MMORPG.

Manage to add in time dilation so we can play for 10 hours and only 15 minutes of real life went by...

For once I really liked what someone posted on reddit about ingress. The theory was this is their way of crowdsourcing info on how pedestrians move in cities to supplement google maps data with turn by turn navigation. It's genius if you think about it. It's the same trick they did with recaptcha to digitalize books.

If they wanted to pay people to read every scribble that didn't make sense in an obscure book it'd be a financial black hole and take them a million years. Instead they made a freaking captcha service and got the work done for free. It amazes me every time I think of it.

In the same way they didn't ask for scarily detailed tracking data about every single step you take but they instead made a game about it and will get people give them that data all by themselves.

Google is really really good at this sort of thing.

That's not virtual reality, it's augmented reality. My dad is in that game, some very cool shit coming out in the near future. Virtual reality will exist once we figure out how to map the neuron paths in our brain and figure out how the subconscious really works. That won't be for a while though :'(

AR will be step towards true VR, man!

Yeah, when we can also inject nanobots into our neurons to intercept neurochemical signals, preamplify them and turn them into electrical signals so that we can control our characters without actually moving ourselves....

I fantasize about how we'd have to start a character who was severely locomotively impaired. Like old school Daggerfall. You have to literally jump 1000 times before your began jumping better. Practice swinging your blade until your arms work right, etc. Study some in-game mysticism until you can shoot fireballs.

*boner*

Is he a lawn maintenance character?

to expand upon this, they'd more than likely use this information for their auto-drive car program, not just navigation systems. Google is ripe to take over the public transportation world in the next decade.
