I was just looking over some of my recent statements and realized that a company I briefly did business with has made 3 charges to my amex business gold card to the tune of $400 starting over a month after I cancelled with them.

Just submitted chargebacks for all 3 of the transactions.

I was told the entire process can take up to 6-8 weeks, but I'm assuming that's only for rare examples.

Anyone here ever done this for an amex biz card and if yes then how long did it take for you to get your money back?

I did it for a charge that was over 6 months old from what I remember. I don't remember how long it took but it wasn't 6 weeks that's for sure. Probably one or two.

Did you get your money back?

Yep. You might want to call them up if you want to bolster your case against the charger.

BTW, when your card comes up for renewal. Call them up and tell them you want to cancel. When they ask why, tell them you don't want to pay the annual fee because you have other no-fee cards. They'll remove the fee if you agree to keep the card another year :)

Speaking as a merchant who has received a couple amex chargebacks, it only takes about 2 weeks for them to make a decision.

If you're referring to a recurring cancellation then the burden of proof is on the merchant to prove that you didn't request a cancellation, which according to my bank is virtually impossible.

From a consumer's perspective I've only filed 1 chargeback and that was on a Visa, it was settled in my favor almost instantly.

Will call them tomorrow and thanks for the annual fee tip.

Did the merchant put up a fight? Did you submit any documents to Amex? I provided the 250 character explanation at the end and that was it.

I did willingly enter my card information into the merchant's system, but the charges were not authorized and I cancelled with them long before these charges even occurred.

I have an email I sent to them requesting cancellation, but they never responded back. Which is ironic, because the main reason for me cancelling was because their ticket response times were terrible.

Appreciate the response thanks.

The merchant didn't put up a fight. I think if you speak to a rep it expedites things and builds rapport with a rep, too, which can help your case. They can also enter additional info. I didn't submit anything.

Yes, claimed non-receipt of merchandise and got credit for the payments within 48 hours while they proceeded with an investigation.
Didn't hear anything from them and kept my credit, so assuming all went well.

How do you even explain that to them? If it happened 6 months ago, surely you looked at your statement 6 months ago when you paid it and saw the charge then, so don't they ask you why you're just now filing it?

AmEx always sides with the customer. They fuck the merchant on so many occasions (I know because I've gotten screwed on completely legitimate orders). It's the absolutely best CC provider for customers and the absolutely worst for merchants

"AmEx always sides with the customer" Skank said it best. The best card to have as a consumer or business.

Could it possibly be OP that you agree to the charges and forgot? Did you call the merchant to see if they would refund you?

I hate chargebacks. Although hate is far too superficial a word to truly describe my feelings toward chargebacks.

I would also try to call the merchant. If they know that your going to file a chargeback anyways, and they're going to lose, it's in their best interest to just refund you and avoid the $35 chargeback fee that they would be charged

And lol at the tag. I hate chargebacks too, but if you have non responsive customer service and charge people for shit 3 months after they cancel what do you expect?

Not sketchy, but if it is an item with high re-sale potential, scammers gravitate to that shit.

From post 6 it would seem you initiated the charge back before contacting them.

It is likely they deserve it... but charging back without contacting the merchant first is not very polite. Most people will refund just to avoid the charge back, which not only hurts given the charge back fees that range from $15-50, but also the fact that it can hurt the merchants standings. I'm not saying chase after them, but at least give them 1 contact and 24 hours before you initiate that shit. Even if it is unlikely, there is a possibility that the issue is due to your mistake (sending cancellation email to wrong address, server issues, not noticing you signed up for more than just one recurring charge and cancelling only one and not all, etc)

And no, the scammer tag was not written by me.
