Anyone here an EMT?



I've taken random courses on the following:

Fiber Optic installation and repair
Locksmithing
Dog Training
Cisco Networking Academy
CPR and First Aid
Fencing
History of the Horror Genre
Gunsmithing

And a bunch more. Never regretted it once. Do it.
 
There's an accident or two near my street corner every month or so. About a year ago, a guy ran into the light pole. About half a dozen people got there before I did. Not one called 911. The guy's girlfriend asked if anyone did, so I called. After pressing 1 for English, I was put on hold! This was at 3am in the morning! At least I'll be able to practice a lot.

From what I've found, the courses cost just under $1000 for 4 or 5 weeks of intensive training (160 hours). The place I'm looking at has classes 5 days a week from 4pm to 11pm. Some places offer weekend instruction.

I have a CPR certification for healthcare workers. (and I am not a healthcare worker) I reguarly carry a good first aid kit, and a mouth barrier.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, so I can't say it is worth your time or mine, but I personally feel good about having the ability to help someone in need.

If you want skills, you also need the skills to direct an emergency situation. Most people freak out, freeze up, and don't know what to do. You need to be able to point at people, and give them specific tasks like "YOU - CALL 911"

There are some studies regarding herd mentality on this issue, but I won't look them up right now. Maybe someone else can find them easier.

Sometimes, when you start gaining knowledge, you may also start gaining responsibility, and I think you're flirting around with that category.
 
Learn the following:

CPR
Heimlich Maneuver
Treating Burns
Suturing
Intravenous & Intramuscular injections
Applying a tourniquet & tourniquet basics
Treating shock
Head injury basics
Dehydration & heat injuries
Cold weather injuries
And learn where all of the important arteries are.

Won't take much time and those are very common injuries that can greatly benefit - if not save the victim's life - from immediate action. Get yourself a small first aid kit, too.

Is it worth the time? Sure. If you're the kind of person who would attempt to save someone's life, then yes. Because if you don't know what you're doing under certain circumstances, your good will could actually kill someone.

Edit:
And learn what rigor mortis is just so it doesn't freak you out if you come across it.

I got this on lock
 
Been an EMT during my younger days, around 16-20 for a rescue team. Now License are expired but hell it was a stepping stone. The knowledge it brings is absolutely phenomenal. Well not good enough for a nurse and a doctor for sure but for 3 months investment for studying compared to nth year of the big guys, this is one good investment of your time. Then your choice if you want to practice more on the fields or not.

You'll know most of what you need incase something happens to a family member or a relative close to you. This can literally save lives man. Go for it!
