I use RingCentral.com. Good rates and automated billing. If you ever want one number to branch out to more then one line (1 number branching into 2-10 numbers, local or 1-800) then I would use gotvmail.com.
I also have call center in New York only charges me $0.59 cents a minute for inbound (cheapest and best I have found). If you need one, let me know and I can PM you the contact info.

Been using Small Business Phone Systems, Virtual PBX, Call Recording, 800 Voicemail, and Call Forwarding Services by ConnectMeVoice for about 10 years and been happy, and the few times I had to call customer service, I always got a human immediately.
I have been so happy, I never bothered to shop around, but I should probably look into the suggestions ^^^ to possibly save some $.

I need to get 500 local telephone numbers, each one being a different city in the US. Anyone know where I could get the best rates? I got a quote a couple months back for $4 a number (unlimited plan, including long distance). Anyone know where I can beat that price. I was honestly hoping I could get each line for $1-2 a month since it's a large number of accounts.

Thanks for the post but I need "local" number (314-xxx-xxx, 913,xxx-xxxx) that site charges 5 a month for local.
We've got approximately 275 toll-free 866/800 numbers for our offers/sites. They aren't as expensive as you'd think. Definitely worth having if customer support is a big priority, which it is for us.
Dreamache - I have a top source, at the root.. buy your own, find a cool vanity number etc, number is portable and will NOT belong to your host.. Many of the services will only lease you a number while you have it, so if you attain a good branded vanity number you're SOL..
I own several vanity numbers, some I paid premium dollars for, but these are potential assets like a domain name..
