I'm sure chrislingle would just tell me to test it myself and i've started to but am wondering people's experiences mixing adsense link units with the adsense ad units on your arbi pages? I guess it's either yes, no, or depends on the niche.

i have an adsense link unit integrated as a fake navigation bar. it is placed below the real navigation bar and suggests that the links are submenus.

Generally, people avoid this for two reasons;
1) The link units requires 2 clicks for you to make money. First, the user has to click on your link unit link. He/she then gets taken to a list of more adsense ads. Second, he/she has to click on one of THOSE ads for the click to count as your revenue. So it's a 2-click action instead of 1 (like the regular ad units).

2) If the link unit is what Google finds to be "first" in your code (and it usually is, seeings how people like to use them as a top bar like you suggest), then the rest of the ad units on your page will get lower payouts. Remember, the more ad units you have on your page - the higher overall CTR you might get, but you also bring up more lower paying ads that people could click on.

I stick with just one ad unit, no link units. You can get a good enough CTR without using link units or more ad units anyway. :)

I use link units at the top of the page and they work pretty well. When it comes to the html, theyre not the first becasue theres a large link unit in another column before it.

I have one sub-site (about recliners) that have no outlinks other than other parts of the site and no ads other than one link unit right below the <h1> tag (right below the article title.)

It only gets about 5 hits a day from Yahoo + Google. I get about 2 clicks per day on the link unit ads. There are days I get over 6 or 7 because when users click on link units, some like hitting the back button and clicking a different ad, like search results.

Howver for my other sites with lots of ads, they get almost ignored.

okay as promised here are my test results. i used a completely new template i made up and used it exclusively for a week. i had one link unit and one ad unit. although i had over a 90% CTR (clicks/visitors), i only made half as much money per click compared to my old template which had 2 ad units. it was awesome having that high ctr but so disappointing to see the revenue comparison. this wasn't exactly apples to apples - 1 site - but across all my niches so take with a grain of salt i suppose.
