I keep getting pestered by a companies selling them, saying they are going to be the next big thing. Is google set up to rank them high in the first place or are they a waste of time & cash?

You can do it at .music (dotMusic) Domain TLD - Generic Top-Level-Domain gTLD Extension. Though I receive enough of their spammy newsletters not to just yet.

There are already many TLD's already that are gathering dust - like the dot mobi, dot asia, dot ws, etc.
Well, it is still unclear when and if the new gTLDs will even be rolled out, I'd say that the value of these domains is near zero.
I know snapnames and pool.com are taking pre-orders for gTLDs that are being dreamed up every single minute -- but will they actually see the day of the light or will they have any value at all to be worth the high sunrise or preoreder price, I am not sure.

I bet they will have the same kind of value as .us . . . To date the biggest sale from a .us name is only around $15k
From my point of view, almost no value at all (except some extreme cases).
.museum, .aero, .travel... are some examples of similar TLDs.

del.icio.us is worth a lot more than 15k, they were worth a lot more than 15k before they switched to .com too...
The domain names imageshack.us and del.icio.us are not worth over 15k. The sites themselves are. If they weren't developed sites they would probably both be worth reg fee.
