Which on would you choose for a newbie to get started in this industry and in your opinion which one has the greater earning potential?

Forum marketing is only good if you are respected and known within the community you are posting. If you dedicate the time and effort into a community it can be a powerful tool but more often than not most noobs just posts "ah I love you guys this is awesome, btw check out this link" and then comes the flamming and banning. If you are going to do forum marketing make sure you provide solutions to people's questions and you network with the right people

I would use both but only one at a time. Which ever method work best and that generate better revenue is the one I will stick to it.
it depends on what your end goal is, ie just wanting backlinks or if you're trying to drive traffic to your site/offers via your articles/forum. both will work. my advice is, learn what each requires and go for the one that resonates better with you, you'll be more likely to stick with it
Dude. Do both. Contribute 5 posts a day to whatever forum you're on and provide some valuable insight to help the community. Gauge the type of demeanor the forum has and commit to it. For example, WF is full of wise-asses. If your posts are vanilla and lack very little humor, you probably won't make it here. On the other hand, if you're on a very conservative forum, don't go telling racial jokes and get banned.
Article marketing is simple. Write an article a day. Can't think of anything to write? Get ideas by searching Google Blogs/News for recent news about your niche.
I can't imagine 5 posts and 1 article per day is going to take more than an hour of your precious time.

when you do article marketing, can you/should you use the article to publish as content on the site that the article links back to - ie on your money site?
I dont want to waste the opportunity of sticking some new content on my site with some articles i ordered, but their purpose is to be handed over to an article marketer. I did google this but I couldnt find a clear answer. I suppose if its published on your site first then it would be seen as original, but if article marketed first then not.
