Note: I just got into affiliate marketing and it's been hard to sort through all the information available. If you're interested in helping me get started in AM, I'd be happy to help you get started in online poker.

It looks like there's some interest in online poker on these forums. If anyone is interested in getting started playing or just curious about the lifestyle of a low limit grinder feel free to post questions here.

About me:
I've been playing on and off for about 4 years. Mostly No Limit Holdem Cash games on Pokerstars. I've played as high as $200 buyin with $1-$2 blinds but for the most part played either $50 or $100. I graduated from university in 2008 and poker has been my sole source of income.

There's actually a lot of things you might want to know before getting started. Stuff like starting bonus promotions, rakeback, multitabling, cashing in, cashing out, issues regarding legality, and more.

Just to be clear, I don't claim to be a high stakes baller. As far as winning players go I'm basically just scraping by. But I've put a lot of time and effort into this game so I feel pretty confident giving my advice to just about any recreational or aspiring professional players.

What kind of advice would you give to new online poker players?

To get started I'd say take advantage of first-time deposit bonuses and get rake back. (Rake back is when you sign a deal with an affiliate to get back a certain percentage of your rake) You can get a good rundown of what's offer at bonuswhores.com. I'm sure there are other's but that's the one I use. They have an email listing for reload deposit bonuses which is nice.

You want to make sure you get it the first time, because if you sign up and deposit without getting these things the first time you won't have another chance.

I have a poker related site geo-targeted for India, with my hosting in the UK. I promote some of the larger poker sites to monetize, but haven't yet tried to cash out. I'm in the US. What are your tips for getting my money without a bank freezing it? Marry a girl from the UK?

PS- I'm not even sure if online gambling is legal in India. I don't think it is... do you know if it is?

Unless you mean cashing out from a poker site I have no idea. I have them direct deposit into my account, but they also send checks.

As for your other question this is all i could find.
Google Answers: Legality of playing online poker in India

What is your bankroll?
Well, I like to play with at least 20 buyins in my account. This has long been considered the standard for playing any given limit, as long as you can move down in stakes when you're running bad. Others are more conservative and like to play with anywhere up to 50 buyins or even 100 buyins.

Bankroll management can get complicated but basically the higher your variance the more money you will want to have. Factors that determine variance could be the kind of game you play (Omaha>Holdem) or the number of players in the game (Heads Up>6max>9max) your winrate (lower>higher) and how aggressive the other players are (more aggression > less aggression).

When playing poker, can one wear a ski mask and sunglasses to hide any signs? The question is serious by the way...

Well I suppose it wouldn't hurt.

As far as I know it's not illegal to play online poker in India and no one has gotten in trouble with the gov for doing so.

i have one ... is there a method you can use to play every day where you know you will make a certain amount of money?

No. It doesn't work like that. If you're a winning player, then you'll make money in the long term, but in the short term no one can guarantee you will win, because no matter how well you play you can get unlucky.

It's like going to the casino. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose and there's never a guarantee either way. But in the end its clear that the casinos have a very successful business model. That's because they make sure they are on the profitable side of chance, and that's what poker players try to do.

Thanks! Do you live in the US? I'm currently running aff links for Pokerstars and Full Tilt and they deposit your commissions into your player account. If you're in the US, what bank are you using to cash out? I had read a bunch of stuff about the government making the larger banks freeze the funds when people cash out.

For online poker, do you like holdem manager or pokertracker better, and why?

You really can't go too wrong with either since they both have dedicated support forums. They're both coming out with new updates all the time to stay competitive. But Holdem Manager would be considered the industry standard for some time now, and it's what I and pretty much everyone else I know uses.

Actually the main reason I went with Holdem Manager is that they offer a 30% discount to premium DeucesCracked members, which I was at the time. They still have this deal today.

Yeah I am in the US. I'm using direct transfers into my Bank of America account and also cashed an FT check recently without any problems. If you're cashing out for larger sums, I think most others are going with bank wires because there's a higher limit.

As for the frozen funds, they have nothing to do with player cash outs. It is the payment processors that the gov is currently after, the middlemen who facilitate the transfer of funds. Although it doesn't directly affect us as players it has resulted in some annoying inconveniences. But ultimately there's no legal reason that you shouldn't be able to get your money.

EDIT: I can PM you more info if you want.
