One of my goals for 2013 is to finally get my music library sorted out.

I've got a large-ish collection, and I prefer my files in .flac format.

I've used winamp for years, and while it doesn't bother me, I'd like to know what you guys use that might be better.

Specifically, I'm looking for something with a one-click ratings system if possible, ala Pandora, and the ability to generate playlists via algorithm ala the genius feature on iTunes.

I don't want to hear about iTunes, because I hate their interface, and afaik they don't support .flac natively.

I'm not looking for a cloud based solution either, just a sleek interface and some library management capabilities, with .flac support, and some intelligent playlist options...

I know it can be done.

Agree with bobsoap.
I switched from Winamp to MediaMonkey as well and I've been very happy.

kinda on the topic;

bestest tracker of all for music. You gotta pass an interview though. You can know everything already, or you can read a few pages of their FAQ and you'll have what you need. And it's information that is worth knowing just for the fucks of it.

very strict with ratios and buying credits in this tracker. Also very careful with uploading, because they have very strict rules about it don't ever share your account with somebody.

I use Songbird for this. Has rating too and if enabled will get album info from net (but I disable it). But not sure how effective the algorithemic playlist feature is. There is smart playlist creation, if that is what you are looking for. Its Opensource. So no loss other than your time in trying it out. Songbird

But recently I moved to Miro Miro - Free, open-source music and video player., another opensource thing because they support playing songs accross Android, PC and Mac thru wifi (they also support iPhone). And also syncs the songs with ease. But creating playlists is still a pain on them. Maybe I'm still new and getting a feel of it.

Winamp has a smart playlist feature, but my library is too large, it's never been able to complete the initial function, and crashes...

why u no like Itunes? Just kidding its pretty much a joke.

XBMC FTW! Its great for your video and your audio. The biggest problem w/ XBMC or anything else is getting your media organized. As long as you have stuff sorted it works great

The nice thing about XBMC is how versatile it is. You have plugins for virtually everything. On mine I have my TV with extra channels (TED talks, National Geo, Youtube etc.) You can also control it from Android / iPhone or a web browser. Be wary though if you are using it with your phone though and switch off the "display sms" option or you'll be in the middle of a film and fucking massive text message appears on you plasma detailing some proper degrading sexual conquest of yours for all your family to read in 800px Sans Serif.

PS. That's not the voice of reason - I'm far too mistrusting of software by default to allow that kind of shizzle happening on my watch!

If your shit isn't tagged properly Musicbrainz and one of their taggers will help you out immensely. When I had music on my computer, I used MediaMonkey too. Songbird is okay, but it needed a lot of fiddling.

Oh yeah, you can also set your resource sources, e.g. I have my movies folder showing a synopsis of the film pulled from IMDB. Same with CD covers, track listings etc.

I'm sure a good deal of other players do this too, but I just like how configurable XBMC is.

It can sometimes get a bit clunky with some skins and if you load it up with too much I've noticed though, but definitely worth a try.

I just built a brand new HTPC and put XBMC on it and use our iPad as the browser/remote which is pretty cool. Haven't barely scratched the surface of what it offers and also need to get my music collection organized which fills 750GB.

JRiver Media Center is also very good. $50, but well supported. I think you can add a custom field to create a rating system.

another vote for mediamonkey for my local files. foobar is nice as well but i always preferred MediaMonkey, i forget the reasons why though...

Spotify is taking over nearly all my music playing now though, it's just works so well
