All keywords and URLs are hypothetical. So with that said, here we go:

I have this site chairs.com. I'm getting ready to start building backlinks. I'm not going to bother trying to rank for the keyword chairs, as that would be impossible for my skill level. I have several 'longtail' keywords that I want to try to rank for, along with focusing on one main keyword. The main one is 'black chairs', however I would like to also rank for 'brown chairs' 'green chairs' and 'yellow chairs'. I'm going to outsource a lot of my link building. So if I order a package of 100 links I'm going to put 50-70% of them towards my main keyword, 'black chairs', and distribute the other links with the other keywords to make my link building efforts look natural (which is why I'm trying to rank for stuff other than black chairs).

Here is the link structure of my site:
chairs.com
chairs.com/black_chairs
chairs.com/yellow_chairs
etc...

I'm trying the hardest to rank for black chairs as that has the best combination of search traffic and competition. Is there any disadvantage to having most of my links point towards chairs.com/black_chairs instead of the index? The index contains general content about the niche, however chairs.com/black_chairs is designed to convert when using the keyword black chairs.

Get what I'm saying? Thanks for the help, and let me know if I need to clarify.

Backlinks are always good.

This question is so general, it is almost impossible to answer.

In an ideal world, get both.
Have the links for "black chairs" point mostly to the subsite, with about 20% to the main page, have links for chairs point to the main site.

(Yes, I am pulling the 20% out of my.....)

yeah, what Emp said and try to mix that anchor text up a bit because if it's all 'black chairs' then it looks a bit sus... then again sometimes that sort of shit goes straight under the radar depending on the actual keyword in question.
