Backlinks vs Content

What is more important: backlinks or content?

You need content to please both google and your audience but you only need backlinks to please Google only after you supply relevant content on your site. Ir starts first with content before you even begin a backlinking campaign. They are both important but must consider at what stages do they matter the most. To answer the poll IMO they both weigh heavy in their own right as proper seo cant be without the other.
 


After the recent Panda update, unique, well written content gets more credit from Google! So, I would say content is the biggest ranking factor now!
 
Well I think there is no comparison between Content and back linking, both are different and have their own significance. You need a quality content with the keywords for the reason that Google and other search engines can recognize your page. But this does not mean that you can get high PR until you have some good clicks. There you would need back linking for promoting your page and to get a decent amount of traffic. Both of them are essential part of SEO tactics and ignoring any one of them would be a LOSS.

Both are VERY important! If you can I would focus more on the content. Fresh content is loved by Google. Back links are good as well, but if you can create an article a day or write in your blog everyday, it will pay off.

This takes time, but don't give up!
 
I wouldn't complain about great back links, but for the best ones, you need some content important sites like. If you are an important site and don't care who you link to, let me know!
 
Content is more important than backlinks.
Google loves content and content is king.
Backlinks will naturally come if the content is informative/helpful.

It really depends on what you want the user's experience to be. Sure, if you are trying to sell a product you will need good content in order to convince a visitor to convert, but if you are using something like Adsense your content doesn't really matter, in fact, the less helpful your content is, the better, because it will hopefully make visitors click on the ads looking for more information. So in other words, great content may not be necessary for your site.

So long story short, I will have to say backlinks. I haven't seen someone's blog skyrocket in the SERPS because they wrote a great article, but I definitely have when someone used certain types of backlinking.
 
its definately a balance of both, good unique content supplemented by natural looking link profile is way to go
 
In terms of your time investment, content has to be more important. Researching keywords and developing content is more time-consuming than getting backlinks. Having said that, I don't think there's a definitive answer. It depends on the website.
 
Depends how you look!

A link on Googles front page will do more than content! If you want to get in Google, you must remember that the links value is based on where it comes from, so this makes content more important.

With content you have more control of the page - where you can get it. Then obviously the link that you choose and place will have more weight than if you simply add links.

Imagine this - your content and 2 of your links
OR
50+ links and your needle in a haystack!

I think focusing on content first is better. All the backlinks in the world aren't going to do you very much good if your site is crap. Plus, searches for what your site is about generally produce more targeted visitors than random visits from backlinks.
 
They are both equally important.

This is coming from somebody who sells backlinks for a living.

Have 1,000,000 backlinks and just "buy viagra!!!" on the page?

No ranking for you.

Have 1,000 backlinks and blog every related viagra news article in uniquely written content?

Great ranking for you!

Have 0 backlinks and still blog every related viagra news article in uniquely written content?

No rankings for you.

BUT, the great thing about this situation is... if you write something worthwhile, people will link to you eventually, and you will rank eventually.

SEO is not an overnight game.
