I know this has been covered before, but there are a lot of conflicting views and the threads were a while back.

I initially want to run a few blogs (using wordpress; a host with fantastico that makes operations fast would be great) to force me to sharpen my design and development skills.

Along side these blogs I will begin dappling in affiliate marketing - setting up landing pages and the sort. I think it would make more sense to go with hosting that is convenient for the short-term - at least until i gain a fuller understanding of online marketing requirements - and then change over, if neccessary.

So what kind of hosting and host would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

you could try Dreamhost, not the greatest but I like them, they should do the job for a starter. With a $97 promo code you get 12 month hosting for $22 and also a free domain.

Dreamhost affiliates can create this kind of coupons and they can offer part of their commision in the coupon (the commission is $97 so the max value a coupon can have is $97 - I recommend using one of those as it is the best option in my opinnion) or extra features like domains or space (which also reduces the ammount of the commission received by the affiliate ).

With all of the problems DreamHost has had recently, I am surprised people still suggest them, but I digress.

I'd go with HostICan, MidPhase, or LunarPages since they offer pretty solid cpanel backends. I have 1-2 accounts with each of these companies.

I really like the stability of HostICan. Incredible servers.

A Small Orange - they have great customer service and quite a few hosting plans to choose from depending on your needs.

Hostgator will be fine for you and includes fantastico. Do a search for "hostgator coupon" and you should fine a code for your first month free... usually it's "iceishot" or "jury".

Sounds like you are just starting out and making a small site so you won't need much bandwidth.

Well, I really can't say that Dreamhost is the best but the hosting worked great for me (about downtime - I know all about it I only had 1-3 downtimes and all only for a few hours - once with the power outtage and once with a DNS problem on Dreamhost servers, but I know other people had many more, I guess is a matter of luck) and for $22/year+1 free domain I still consider it a good choice for somebody just starting out, of course moving to a better solution later (VPS maybe?).

Also thank you guys for your opinions I will use them also as I was thinking of trying some other hosts besides the ones I use now in the next weeks :)

I am currently using hostgator and their service is excellent
I have the $10 plan (lots of domains)
give them a try, and you don't need to pay for a full year, if you don't like them you can just move away
there's actually plenty of good hosts, just don't trust hosting charts, the owners just put at the top those with the highest commissions

hostgator is great, just $9.97 a month, unlike many others, you have to pay 3 /6 months or 1 year in advance.

I use Dreamhost and I much prefer their panel to Fantastico. If you have any major problems with the server they put you on, just bitch loudly and often and they'll move you to one that's less crowded.

The only thing that blows is that WP hijacks the Dreamhost stats page and you have to add some new code into the htaccess file. Why WP hasn't fixed this over the last several recent upgrades, I'd really love to know.

Thanks

Thanks alot for the advice, I will go with hostgator until my needs develop or I have a problem - whichever happens first.

I hear a lot of shit against GoDaddy hosting, but I've personally had no bad experience with them. Hostgator is a pretty sound option too. And seeing as your in the UK, I would recommend heartinternet.co.uk. Bloody fantastic host, I've never experienced any downtime with them, but it is more pricey than hostgator, and its in pounds. lol :)

I have heard very good reviews about them.

As for Dreamhost/HostGator... They are only good for hosting photos. Yes, they give you more space and bandwidth then you know what to do with but they cut you loose the second you start using any CPU power.

Any host that oversells to the extent that they do is not worth it imo.

When shopping around for hosting everyone always goes for the biggest package, forgetting that they will never use all the space or bandwidth.

Great thread...coz I also have some hosting question too.

Seems like HostGator/Dreamhost is popular here. Can anyone tell me how reliable Bluehost is compare to this two?
